Reed Myers and Ethan Spry ended where they started — as champions.
The seniors, as freshmen, led their program in scoring and to a championship. Thoughts of a four-peat crossed their minds.
But ACL injuries to them as well as starting junior guard Jordan Moody left them frustrated, sidelined and with only one ring. They were all smiles Saturday at Gila River Arena, however.
The trio and their team sure looked healthy, as they feasted on diet of threes against Alchesay to open a big lead and never look back in its 72-41 2A championship win.

“This team is resilient,” Scottsdale Christian coach Bob Fredericks said. “Three kids on this team (Moody, Myers, Spry) came back from near career ending injuries and significant surgery.
"If it weren’t for those type of injuries, they might have won four in a row.”
Injuries derailed the four-peat dream, but a “championship sandwich” was still in play for the seniors.
At last year’s team’s banquet, Fredericks told his four-year players his goal for them was to win one more ring. They quickly set out to complete the goal Saturday, with Scottsdale Christian running out to a 14-0 lead and converting five threes in the first eight minutes.
Scottsdale Christian made 11 of its 21 shots beyond the arc in the game.
"Last year was really, really hard with the ACL injury,” said Myers, who made 3 of 6 threes and tallied 17 points. "All of the rehabing. I mean this is what it’s for. I’m just so blessed to be here and so blessed to play again. To win again is the best feeling. I am so thankful for the opportunity.”
Last year, Alchesay also trailed by a lot in the 2A title game but staged a furious rally before losing.
This year, there was no such rally, because Scottsdale Christian just kept making shots. For the game, it shot 59.6 percent.
Spry (22 points, 15 rebounds), Matthew Fan (10 points) and Reed scored in double figures and made all of their team’s threes except for one.
The team ended the season with a 25-5 record and a memorable double-double for Fredericks. He coached his school's girls team to a runner-up finish Saturday, the first state title appearance in that program's history.
He capped his busy season and day at Gila River with his 7th title after his boys won.
"The switching over (to teams) is something we are used to and playing all year, back to back,” the coach said. "It's just that the stakes were higher today. I have a heavy heart for the girls, but it doesn’t take away any of the elation from the boys."
