September 30, 2011 by Game Previews, AZPreps365

It’s a battle of unbeatens Friday night as the Centennial Coyotes host the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks in a huge Division II showdown in Peoria. It’s a rematch of last year’s 5A-II Semifinals where the Coyotes knocked off the Nighthawks 38-28. Centennial, however, went on to lose in the title game to Chaparral. The Nighthawks are currently ranked first in the Division II standings, while the Coyotes are fourth.

Centennial is off to a perfect 5-and-0 start to the season following a 41-7 victory at Willow Canyon last week. The Coyotes, led by senior Zach Hoffpauir, have outscored their opponents 213-42 so far this year. They kick off a three-game road trip at undefeated Deer Valley next week. Asked how does he make sure his team does not overlook Ironwood Ridge, head coach Richard Taylor said “No, No chance of overlooking IR. We have played them the last few years and know what an outstanding team they are.” Taylor added that “this week (of practice) has been going well. Guys are working hard and seemed very focused.”

Ironwood Ridge, also 5-and-0 on the year, most recently beat Marcos de Niza 34-20 last week. The Nighthawks have outscored their opponents 163-39 so far. Ironwood Ridge is led by senior running back Mitch Fischer, who has rushed for over 700 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. The ‘Hawks have racked up over 1,400 yards and 23 TDs on the ground as a team. Quarterback Tyler Williams has thrown for just over 300 yards and five scores, but has close to 400 yards and eight touchdowns rushing. Kickoff Friday night is set for 7 pm.
