With the Division I volleyball playoffs beginning in a week, Hamilton and Corona del Sol aimed to keep momentum going Tuesday night from last weekend a the Nike Tournament of Champions.

Hamilton finished third in the Platinum Division of the annual ourney. That's the elite division of the tournament. Corona del Sol won the Gold Division, the consolation bracket of the top 16-seeded teams.

The school that won out  Tuesday night in the battle for mo was Hamilton, as the Huskies swept Corona del Sol, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-23 at Hamilton.

"The matches we played last weekend were a faster caliber game," Hamilton coach Sharon Vanis said. "That's the way we like to play. This is the time of year you want to be playing well, and we are right now. The last few matches have been a confidence booster."

Hamilton is able to come at opponents from several directions. Tuesday night attacking was led by juniors Brittany Thomas (eight kills) and Savannah Banyai with seven. Also chipping in with a few each were Payton Bock, Reigna Johnson and Lauren Jacobsen. Libero Alexa Saba came up with 19 digs. Corona was led unofficially by Kasey Kiefer with eight kills and Alexa Moser with six.

"We battled, just couldn't get over the hump in any of the games," Corona del  Sol coach Ben Maxfield said. "We've been battling through a few injuries. But we passed the ball well and have gotten used to our setter who's done that for us the last couple years.

"We played very well last week at the tournament. It's tough losing this one. We just have to come out and win our last one (Thursday vs. Desert Mountain)."

Hamilton entered the match No. 8 in the power rankings and cemented its hold on that spot for now. The Huskies close the regular season Thursday against Perry.

"It's hard right now because you really don't know who you are going to face in the playoffs," Vanis said. "We could end up playing one of the hardest teams in the first round. You have to be ready to play, and hopefully playing your best at this point."

Corona del Sol entered the night in the 16th slot of the power rankings. The Aztecs margin of error is slim, but a win against Desert Mountain should earn them a playoff spot.

"We need to win (Thursday), and then I think we'll be ready to roll," Maxfield said.
