D-I, D-II state golf tournaments set for Laveen and Tucson

The girls are playing in the Valley on Friday. The boys tee it up in Tucson on Friday. After Saturday's final round four team golf champions in the Division I and Division II state tournaments.

The D-I and D-II girls play their 36-hole tournament at Aguila Golf Club in Laveen. Division I qualified 13 teams for the championship and it's expected that defending champion Hamilton will wage a spirited battle with last-year's runner-up Xavier for the top spot. Division I girls tee off at 6:45 a.m. Division II gets started at 11 a.m.

Eight schools qualified for the girls Division II crown, won last year by Catalina Foothills. Qualifying schools are Salpointe, Notre Dame Prep, Ironwood Ridge, Cactus Shadows, Sahuaro, Scottsdale Christian, Liberty and Shadow Mountain. Division II tees off beginnin at 11 a.m. Salpointe, which returns three golfers in the top 25 of D-I  last year, is considered the favorite.

The returning defending individual champions from 2010 are Division I  and Division II girls. That's Hamilton's Kyung Kim (D-I) and Cienega's Jordan Carter (D-II). Cienega has moved up to D-I this year so Carter will compete with Kim.  Hamilton returns three players who finished in the top 10 last year helping the Huskies subdue Xavier by 22 strokes for the D-I crown. Also in the D-I girls field is Xavier's Sarah Schmelzel, runner-up last year to Kim.

The Division I and Division II boys tournaments compete at Randolph Golf Course in Tucson. Division I boys battle at the Dell Urich Course where 13 schools qualified for team honors. Qualifiers are defending champion Red Mountain, 2010 runner-up Desert Vsita, Pinnacle, Boulder Creek, Brophy, Horizon, Hamilton, Perry, Mesa Mountain View, Chaparral, Ironwood Ridge, Desert Ridge and Mountain Pointe. Top contenders for the team title are Red Mountain, Desert Vista, Hamilton, Brophy and Pinnacle. D-I boys tee off at 10:45 a.m.

Half of the top 13 individual finishers return led by Desert  Vista's Cody McManus (tie for 2nd) and Matt Liringis (4th), Pinnacle's Zach Wright (tie for 5th), Red Mountain's Kolton Lapa (tie for 5th), Brett Wilson (tie for 7th) and Colton West (tie for 13th). Boulder Creek's Brenden Bone tied for 10th in 2010. 

Seven schools qualified for the Division II boys championship played this year on the Randolph North Course. The field is led by last year's champion Canyon del Oro. Also qualifying are Salpointe, Seton Catholic, Thunderbird, Queen Creek, Sabino and Catalina Foothills. D-II boys get started at 10:50 a.m.

Top returning indiividuals in D-II are Canyon del Oro's Jaime Waltmire (2nd) and Logan France (tie for 6th), Cactus Kale Davidson (tie for 6th), Sunrise Mountain's Tommy Marino (tie for 10th), Williams Field's Nick Hool (tie for 10th), Canyon del Oro's DJ Nichel (tie for 15th) and Queen Creek's Ajay Wilson (tie for 15th).
