The way Gilbert High's boys volleyball team was playing Thursday night  they didn't need help from Hamilton when it came time for the Huskies to serve.

No. 5 Gilbert took ample advantage of service errors by Hamilton in the first two games and saved a solid performance game one through three to eliminate the No. 1-seed Huskies, 25-17, 25-22 and 25-21 in the Divison I state tournament at Gilbert High.

A raucous Gilbert crowd fueled the fire for the host Tigers as ithey made the finals for the second time in school history. Gilbert was the runner-up in 2009 and seeking its first title. Gilbert's second  title match comes Saturday May 12 at 7 p.m. against  No. 6 Brophy, which toppled No. 10 Highland, 25-20, 21-25, 29-27, 25-20. The match will be played at Gilbert High. Gilbert can become the first school ever to win the boys and girls volleyball titles in the same school year if it wins on Saturday.

"I thought the team that played the best defense tonight would win," Gilbert coach Jeff Grover said. "We have a good offensive line, and we blocked well and defended well... This is the most dynamic, most complete team I've had here."

Gilbert was led by senior opposite Cody Martin, who produced 16 kills and six blocks. Outside hitter Tyler Hutchins added 10 kills and Spencer Wright and Travis Cole six apiece. The win reversed a four-set loss earlier this year to the Huskies.

Gilbert separated itself midway through the first game. The Tigers led at that point, 15-14. They finished it off with five kiils and a stuff block plus two of Hamilton five' service errors in the game (five total). Hutchins finished off game one and game two with kills. Hamilton followed up with six service errors in game two that made it much easier for Gilbert to win an otherwise tight second game.

"No question the service errors hurt us," Hamilton coach Jeff Bader said. "Gilbert played very well. And Cody Martin. If he's not our state's POY (player of they year), I don't know who is."

Brophy, which has won three boys volleyball titles, wll try for a fourth after being pushed hard for the first time in the tournament. The Broncos beat their first two opponents easily in straight sets and lost their first set in game two on Thursday.

Game three with Highland was the pivotal one as Brophy faced game-point twice and nearly blew a 19-13 lead. Kills down the stretch of game three from Carson Westerfield, Jake Kufel and standout NIck Benson swung the momentum back to Brophy. Perhaps more than Brophy's play in the final few points was Highland's service errors. The Hawks committed six in the 29-27 loss.

Brophy coach Tony Oldani told his team Highland made them play better.

"They pushed us more than anyone has lately," Oldani said. "We had the momentum in game three the first half and sputtered the second half. We managed to squeak it out and that was huge."

Brophy also has a powerful group of hitters led by Nick Benson, who contribute a team-high 16 kills. Freshman Ryne Benson had 15 kills and middle Ryan Dowd added 10 kills.

Highland, which returns most of its starting lineup next year, got quality perfromances from seniors Jeff Chapman (16 kills) and Isaac Turley (14 kills). Junior Ryan Morrison had 12 kills
