Brophy nabs return to big-school title game, tops Mesquite

The bottom of the sixth wasn''t a do-or-die inning for Brophy Prep on Saturday night, but it turned out to be the one that killed Mesquite.

Trailing 3-2 with two outs and noone on, No. 4 Brophy scored seven runs on a collection of walks, hit batters, an infield hit and finally a grand slam to beat No. 6  Mesquite, 9-3, in a Division I baseball tournament elimination game at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Brophy (23-8) advances to Tuesday's title game at Camelback Ranch Stadium in Glendale at 7 p.m.  with a rematch against No. 2 Chaparral, the lone unbeaten in the tournament. Chaparral beat Brophy, 6-5, last Thursday in the final winner's bracket game. It will be Brophy's fourth championship game appearance and first since 2007. Brophy was runner-up to Horizon in 2007, beat Horizon in 2006 for its only title and lost back in 1982 to Sahuaro. Mesquite finished 2012 at 25-9.

Was it Brophy's plate discipline in the sixth or a tight strike zone? It can be argued. Mesquite reliever Garrett Jeffries, trying to hold a 3-2 lead fashioned by starter Tanner Wilson through the first four innings, had an easy fifth and got the first two outs of the sixth before things got  hairy.

Brophy's Nick Jewett and Connor  Messman drew walks to begin the rally. Jeffries then hit Ryan Castellani with a pitch to load the bases. No. 9 hitter Connor Moore  got the game even at 3 drawing the third walk of the frame. All three walks came on 3-2 pitches although the close pitches of those at-bats were on 2-2 counts.

Mesquite coach Jeff Holland then replaced Jeffries with John Ferrendelli. Ferrendelli surrendered an infield hit ona  tough play for shortstop Ozzie Rodriguez to make going to his right and throwing back across the diamond. Brophy's Dave Graybill hit it and beat the wide throw putting the Broncos up 4-3.

Another 3-2-count  walk to Emilio Torrez followed, making it 5-3. Brophy put the game away on the next pitch as Chris Beall hammered a long grand slam to right.. Graybill was the winning pitcher with two innings of scoreless relief of starter Michael Westra.

"We worked hard all night on long at-bats," Brophy coach Tom Succow said. "We battled. There was nothing special we did. We just focused pitch by pitch."

Mesquite, which had won three tough elimination games to get to the brink of returning to its first  title game since 2008, found the sixth inning tough to swallow.

"Brophy's a heckuva team," Holland said. "But it's hard to believe high school hitters have that kind of eye......

Holland also said his team had its chances to do more damage early in the game, particularly in the fourth  when it led 2-0 and had the bases loaded with no outs. It's 7-8-9 hitters combined for two hits and walk to load the bases. A double play and fly out halted the rally with just one run scoring.

Mesquite lost leadoff  hitter and shortstop Seth Fretheim on the first at-bat of the game when he fouled a ball off his knee. He had to leave the game.

"He was in pain," Holland said. "I know he wanted to try and get back in, but I have to look out for his future.... If I had 12 Seth Fretheim's we'd be good every year."

Beall finished the night 3-for-4 and scored twice. Jeffries led Mesquite with two doubles and teammate Brad Holland added two singles.

Brophy will try to supplant Chaparral as state champ in the fourth meeting of the year between them on Tuesday. Chaparral has won two of the first three all played within the last three weeks. Chaparral, which sports eight baseball state titles, has never won a big-school title. The Firebirds won a 5A-II crown last year, a 4A-I title in 2008 and 4A titles in 1994, 1999, 2000 and 2003-2005.  They were runners-up in 4A in 1997 and 1999. The only years they played for the big-school title (5A) was in 1979 and 1989, losing to Coronado and Moon Valley, respectively.
