Boys soccer state notes: Weber can tie state big school mark

Tucson Salpointe's Wolfgang Weber's quest for a sixth title starts Wednesday. 

The Arizona boys soccer coaching legend can tie another coaching giant, former Glendale Cactus coach Jack Altersitz, for the most big school titles in Arizona if Weber wins his sixth championship this season. Salpointe, the favorite in the Division II tournament, opens its playoff run at home against Mohave.

Division I

Alhambra: Coach Zachary Zamenski gas guided team to two consecutive playoff appearances. The last time the program reached playoffs prior to 2011-12 season was 2003. ... Christian Baron is team's leader in assists. ... Oscar Rochin and Aziz Allanidkim are teams leading scorers but balanced team receives a lot of help up front. … Team played a tough schedule but finished with a 14-3-1 record.

Carl Hayden: Roberto Carrizosa is team’s leading scorer with 19 goals. … Carl Hayden has reached the playoffs every season since sixth-year coach Abner Calderon took over. … Roberto Carrizosa was leading team with 20 goals. … “We are still working on being more consistent, since it’s what has been off this year,” Calderon said. … Team has a great midfield and was the runner up in the Arizona Soccer Showcase.

Corona del Sol: Moving Aaron Flegenheimer and Ellis Rutili from defensive roles to forwards has helped the team offensively. … Injuries and flu bug kept the team from fielding its best 11 until Jan. 4. … Team lost a top defender, Jeremy Ramsland (fractured tibia), during AZ Showcase. … “Although the beginning of the season was difficult, it taught the players not to depend on one or two players for success, rather attacking and defending as a team,” coach said.

Gilbert: Will be making its 13th playoff appearance with 13-year coach Jeff Perry. … Trevor Irion was leading team with 23 assists, Ryker Seifert had 15 goals, and goalkeeper Hayden Rus has 14 shutouts. … Chris LoConti is one of the state’s better defenders. … Team has advanced to at least the state quarterfinals the past 10 seasons.

Kofa: Kevin Huizar and Jesus Felix each had 12 goals. … “We are small town team that just wants to represent its school and town with pride the best way they can,” coach said.

Pinnacle: Has reached the postseason in eight of the 10 seasons Brock Heykoop has been the head coach. … University of Washington-bound forward Mason Robertson has 30 goals and 10 assists. … Senior center midfielder Daniel Wall has been out with an ankle injury, but team is hoping he’ll return for the playoffs.

San Luis: Tenth consecutive year program has reached the playoffs. ... Leonardo Moreno had scored 14 goals in 12 games. ... Raul Ordorica had 15 assists, seven goals in 12 games. ... Injuries, two losses to rival schools and eligibility issues helped the team mature.

Tolleson: Former assistant Benjamin Andronic took over as coach of a solid program that has reached the playoffs every year since 2004. ... Jeremy Steiner is arguably the second best player in the state.

Westview: Talented team didn't play at full strength this year because of injuries. ... Roberto Valadez Paz was leading team with 23 goals.

Division II

Cactus Shadows: Nicky Jackson had 29 goals, 7 assists. … Team played with a full squad only three times because of injuries and flu.

Campo Verde: Former Chandler-Gilbert CC coach Drew Guarneri took over this year, the fourth coach the program has had in as many years. … This is the first time in the playoffs for the program. … Sam Gleadle has scored 34 goals with 14 assists. … Briley Guarneri had 14 asistst and played goalkeeper in six matches.

Catalina Foothills: Coach Julie Walters started the program in 1992 and has been in the playoffs every year since 1998. … Jean Butron has contributed big goals recently. … Jack Ferguson and Matthew Romagnolo are distributing the ball well and creating chances for themselves. … Team had its share of injuries during one of the more difficult schedules in program’s history. … Team won Salpointe’s Brandon Bean tournament for the first time.

Copper Canyon: Former assistant coach Justin Bogus took over the program this year. … Sophomore Juan Hernandez had 25 goals and six assists. … Team graduated 12 seniors last year, forcing Bogus to move second-team All-State forward Oswaldo Lopez to sweeper this season. Lopez is now one of the best defenders in the state, coach said. … Team’s only loss of the year came to Ironwood in PK’s in the final of a tournament. … Six players each have at least five goals.

Flagstaff: Uriel Rivera leads the team with 16 goals, 11 assists. … Team has scored 83 goals. … “Everyone contributes on this team,” coach said. “We don’t have a true star, just a group of student athletes who are great at playing soccer as a team.” … Program has reached the playoff 14 times in its 15-year existence.

Notre Dame: Teams has suffered a handful of injuries and has never had a full team with the exception of one or two games. Tommy Hebert, arguably the state’s No. 1 goalkeeper, is out after a recent injury. Team has a great backup in goalkeeper Nick Babu. … Team has reached two state finals in coach Kenny Hack’s three seasons. … Moving Brennan McLane from holding mid to sweeper provided some leadership to talented back line. … Can team put away its shots?

 

South Mountain: Yabin Cruz was leading the team with 36 goals. … Team earned the No. 1 seed despite graduating 10 seniors from 2012 team. … Team’s bench is as strong as the starters, third-year coach Carlos Aguilera said.

Tempe: Jose Luis Soto and Kevin Reyes lead the attack with 30-plus combined goals. … Newcomers Lulu Garduno and Jose Fierro help control games. … Johnny Aviles and Goyo Rojas are team’s lock down defenders. … Keeper Luis Perez has been outstanding in goal this season.

Thunderbird: Coach Dennis Baker returned for his 12th season after taking a four year break. ... Arturo Ramirez is the team's leading scorer. ... Team finished second in the Glendale Disrtict tourney and fourth in the Moon Valley tourney. ... Team has great all around balance, coach said.

Verrado: Sergio Rizo was leading team with 21 goals. … Team has 11 shutouts and midfielders have scored 41 goals.

Washington: Adam Roberts is in his 18th year as the boys soccer coach. … Freshman Jesus Valenzuela was leading the team with 20 goals. … Team showed its depth when it had eight starters out due to injury or illness and still won two recent games. … “Victor Bastida, Miguel Torres and Omar Guzman have been brilliant in the central midfield and my back line is anchored by Alek Garcia,” coach said.

Division III

Coronado: The favorite to win the D-III title. … Team has scored 110, allowed only four. … Sophomore Miguel Gonzalez has scored 54 career goals already but is injured. Teams still has a lot of depth and will rely on talented freshman Christian Gonzalez to help out with the scoring.

 

Douglas: Team has won a state title and finished as state runner up once and reached the postseason seven times in Ken Cormier's 10 years as coach. ... Senior captain Luis Teran dislocated his shoulder at the Start of the year and did not return to his center midfield spot until after the Christmas break. ... Team has had the same assistant coaches, Alphonso Romero and Victor Ramos, for about nine years. ...

Fountain Hills: Team has reached playoffs in each of coach Anthony Galietta's six seasons as coach. ... Junior Cody Dunham was leading team with nine goals, five assists. ... Only four of 17 players had varsity experience when this season started for the 2012 state semifinalist. ... Play of sophomore goalkeeper Lucas Johnson has helped boost the confidence of team, coach said.

Northwest Christian: Coach Jeff Penzone hasn’t missed the playoffs in his nine years as the program’s coach. … Adnrew Zonoozi had 12 goals. … Team lost six starters from last year’s team but team is jelling, coach said. … Solid defense is built around senior Chandler Maszton, juniors Pete Martin and Justin Johnson and sophomore Sam Temple. … Freshman Scott Martin has been “tremendous.”

Phoenix Christian: Coach Jim Callahan is in his 13th year as head coach. … Tyler Chirico was leading the team with 14 goals. … With enrollment at 220, team had a difficult time fielding a team this year.

Seton Catholic: Zach Blomberg has scored 20 goals with 15 assists. … Team plays two first-year senior goalkeepers and three freshmen on the field, but team never gives up, coach said. … Team has done a good job in rallying to win games. … New assistant coach Tony Prutch has played a key role with the team this season.

Scottsdale Christian: Cole Lenderink had 25 goals. … Team has several shutouts thanks in part to defense and goalkeeper Jack Johnson.
