AIA, medical partners receive Arizona Public Health award

One of the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s medical partners, Dr. Javier Cardenas, the AIA and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center were recently recognized for introducing a concussion program in 2011, Brainbook.

The Arizona Public Health Association’s Health and Education Section gave Dr. Cardenas, the AIA and St. Joseph’s the Health Education Media Maker Yearly Award for Brainbook: A statewide pilot for educating athletes about concussion.

The AIA became the first state association to request that all of its athletes pass a concussion program, Brainbook, before they can play. Brainbook also was developed in conjunction with the Arizona Cardinals. 

Dr. Cardenas is a pediatric neurologist with the internationally renowned Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Since 1928, the Arizona Public Health Association has worked to create healthy communities, according to its website.

The Health Education Media Maker Yearly Award celebrates annualy the great work achieved in promoting health.
