Trevor Browne senior Miguel Ruiz was recovering in a hospital after getting hit in the face on Thursday during a game.

Ruiz, Trevor Brown’s ace, was batting when a fastball hit him in the third inning in Trevor Brown’s home game against Mesa Desert Ridge. Ruiz’s nose bore the brunt of the impact.

Phoenix firefighters had to take Ruiz to a hospital. Ruiz was then transferred to another hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Trevor Browne coach Deston Cummings said Ruiz suffered multiple fractures.

“I talked to (Ruiz on Sunday),” Cumming said. “He said he is felling better.

“He has not once felt sorry for himself. He is a tough kid.”

Ruiz also is the vocal leader of a squad that went 19-6 last season and won a state playoff game.

The injuries Ruiz suffered last week will keep him from playing the rest of this season, Cummings said. The pitch that was thrown at Ruiz on Thursday was unintentional, Cummings said.

Desert Ridge coach Pat Herrera has kept in touch with Cummings to see how Ruiz is doing.
