With a flurry of basketball coaching moves of late, one of the state's top volleyball coaches regardless of gender is making a move.

Fred Mann, who coached the Mountain Pointe boys and girls volleyball teams to a eight state championships, has been named girls volleyball coach at Perry High School effective for the 2013-2014 school year. Mann will also be a guidance counselor at Perry.

Mann led Mountain Pointe's  boys volleyball program to state titles in 1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2009, and the girls volleyball  program to the 2001 championship. In addition,  Mountain Pointe teams combined for three state runner-up seasons under Mann.

Born and raised in South Africa, Mann served a two-year mandatory military service in the Parachute Battalion 1985-1986. He played outside hitter in college for a national championship team. Mann moved to the U.S. in 1991 at age 25. He played professional beach volleyball from 1990 until 1995 in both South Africa and the U.S and began coaching at Mountain Pointe when the school opened in the early 1990s.
