D-2, 3 baseball notes for final week of regular season

The final regular season week of the 2013 baseball and softball seasons is upon us, and teams are still jockeying for position, trying to lock down one of the 24 seeds for each tournament.

Everybody will learn Thursday which teams reached the postseason during the AIA’s first ever baseball/softball bracket release show.

Below are a couple of notes on Division II and III baseball teams to get you ready for the action this week.

Division II baseball

Cactus Shadows: Team had won eight in a row under second-year coach Gaetano Gianni before dropping its games against highly-ranked Notre Dame and Greenway. … Cameron Ketchen (seven home runs) and Jake Meuhlch are each hitting about .400. … Lefty Joey Wise has signed with Central Arizona, Jake Colombo and Cameron Ketchen with Paradise Valley. Colombo didn’t pitch during the first 15 games of the season because of elbow soreness.

Gila Ridge: Junior Victor Castro is 8-0. … Seniors Irving Lopez and Hayato Johnson are the team’s leading hitters with plus-.400 averages.

Ironwood Ridge: Four-year starter Jake Matthews is batting .447 with 36 RBI’s, and Devin Harrison is hitting .500 with 42 RBI’s. … Five of the team’s 13 seniors have started since their sophomore year.

Queen Creek: Junior Ryan Kottcamp (.451), Kody Funderburk (.448 ave., 17 walks), senior Jaren Holmes (.450 ave., 5-2, 1.96 ERA), junior Marcus Still (.434 ave.), Chase Beal (.384 ave., 5-1, 3.89 ERA, 47 K’s), and sophomore Josh Andrews (2-1, 1.02 ERA) are the team’s stat leaders. … “Our team is successful because every guy wants to contribute in any way possible,” coach Mike Campbell said.

Liberty: Tyler Wyatt, Zach Johnston, Cody Roose, and Rudy Karre are each totting plus-.400 batting averages. Wyatt and Johnston each have sub-2.0 ERA’s.

Page: The team has added an hour to its travel plans due to the closure of US-89. The team travelled about 1,500 miles last week, and the team’s shortest trip is about an hour and a half. “Players have never let it (travel) become an excuse, though,” coach Alex Randel said. “They show up and play no matter how far we have to drive.” … Senior C.J. Ripka leads the tam with a .405 average, Carson Wright has 21 RBI’s, and Collin Knight is 4-2 with a 3.55 ERA.

Sahuaro: Junior Alex Verdugo is hitting .500 and is 7-0 with a 1.07 ERA. … Staff ERA is 2.29, and the team is averaging less than one error per game. … Team lost starting catcher in March, but sophomore Phil Hindes and Jake Northrup have stepped in to help fill the void.

Sunrise Mountain: Brick Paskiewicz leads the team with a .425 average and is also 6-1 with a 2.35 ERA on the mound. The shortstop/right-handed pitcher also has 12 doubles and five triples. … Right-handed pitcher Billy Oxford is 5-0 with a .58 ERA. … Outfielder Brandy Elrod is hitting .426 with three triples. … The team starts seven seniors every day.

Division III baseball

Blue Ridge: Pitcher/shortstop Kevin Spencer and Pitcher/second baseman Matt Farrar are the team’s captains. Kevin Spencer is batting .560 and Matt Farrar .450. … “We are successful because these kids are resilient, and they never quit,” coach Joe Merklin said. “They are a tight-knit group who pull for each other.”

Payson: Nick McMullen is hitting .531 with 44 RBI’s and was likely leading the state with 11 home runs. … Miguel Mendoza has six wins and 43 K’s. … “As a team we have a strong group of juniors who really believe in each other,” coach Brian Young said. “These guys never give up.”

River Valley: Senior Gabe Blair (.369, 28 RBI’s), Junior Tyler Scully (.507, 26 RBI’s), junior Derrik Advocate (.433) are the team’s top hitters. … Ankle injuries to three key players this season, including senior Matt Cronn (.419 ave.) and David Sanchez (2-0, 1.58 ERA), haven't kept the team from posting a 23-1-1 record.
