Mountain View boys hoops remains unbeaten, tops Brighton

The Mesa Mountain View boys basketball team can lay claim for another day to being the only unbeaten Arizona team in 5A-I.

The Toros got a stiff challenge Tuesday night from Brighton, Utah, but stayed the course to post a 70-62 win over the Bengals in the final game of round two of the VisitMesa.com Arizona Basketball Challenge at Mountain View High School.

Mountain View, which led nearly the entire game, trailed 37-36 for about 10 seconds with just more than 11 minutes left in the second half. Bu the Toros used a 12-0 run over the next couple minutes to regain control and earn their eighth win of the season.

Jaren Sweeney led Mountain View (8-0) with 21 points. Mark Mazzucco added 14 points, Camyn Boone 12 and Mitch Wallace tossed in 12 off the bench. Brighton (5-2) got a game-high 26 points from Corbin Miller. Mountain View is 2-0 in the tourney and Brighton 1-1.

In other tournament games Tuesday, Lutheran, Orange Calif .(9-3) outscored Chandler 39-15 in the second half to defeat  the Wolves, 59-34. Lutheran got 13 points each from James Douglas and Gabe York. Kisima Jagne led Chandler (5-7) with 10 points. Lutheran is 1-1 in the tournament and Chandler  0-2....... Moeller, Ohio (7-0) used another strong defensive effort, particularly in the second half to shut down Sunnyslope, 64-40. Moeller used a 31-7 advantage in the second half. Alex Barlow led Moeller with 10 points. Twelve Moeller players scored. Isaiah Cota paced Sunnyslope (9-4) with 13 points. Moeller improved to 2-0 in the tournament; Sunnyslope is 0-2....... Red Mountain rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final two minutes to force overtime and went on to knock off Buena, 80-73. Logan Larsen scored a team-high 18 points for  Red Mountain (7-5), including three 3s late and an assist on the game-tying basket in regulation with 12 seconds left. Eric Pacheco (15), Kevin Torres (13) and Justin Park (11) also scored in double figures for Red Mountain. Merle Branch scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for Buena, who was led in scoring by Marc Matthews (19). Red Mountain is 1-1 in the tournament; Buena is 0-2....... Westwind Prep ran its season-long win streak to 13 by outgunning Serra, Calif.; 67-59 SteenTopercer tallied 23 points and DeMarquise Johnson added 16 for Westwind. Westwind is 2-0 in the tourney; Serra is 0-2....... Malcolm McKinney scored six of his game-high 31 points in the two overtime periods, incluiding two free throws with four seconds left in the second OT to give Dobson (8-4) an 85-83 triumph over St. Mary's. Chris Mason poured in 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for St. Mary's (7-3). Both teams are 1-1 in the tournament.... Zeke Chapman scored 26 points and made 8-of-8 free throws in the final minutes as Chaparral (10-2) held off Amphitheater (10-2), 67-64. Domineik Banks paced Amphi with 18 points. Chaparral is 2-0 in the tourney and Amphi is 1-1..... Randall Turner's layup with 1:15 left in overtime snapped the game's final tie and Steven Knox made five free throws in the final 53 seconds to lift Mountain Pointe (6-4) to an 85-81 win over Horizon (8-3). Mountain Pointe and Horizon are 1-1 in the tournament.
