MLK Basketball Classic news and notes

Chandler dominated the paint most of the game and used that advantage to knock off 5A Fiesta Region rival Hamilton,55-45, in a girls game that opened play Monday at  the 2011 Martin Luther King Basketball Classic at ASU Wells Fargo Arena.

Je Zhe Newton scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds  to lead the Wolves, who improved to 13-4, 2-0. Hamilton (13-4, 1-1) got 11 points each from Lauren Evans and Chelcee Pullam. Chandler gradually built a lead from the first through third periods and dominated the boards with a 45-25 edge. The Wolves held off a minor run in the final period by the Huskies. Hamilton suffered from poor shooting all game, making just 15 of 75 shots from the field.

Chandler introduces Simone Westbrook  to its lineup Tuesday. Westbrook transferred from Desert  Vista to Chandler over the holiday break and had to wait 10 school days to be eligible to play. Westbrook,  a junior,  led Desert Vista in scoring the past two seasons. Chandler visits Desert Vista on Tuesday night in a Fiesta Region game.

 

Arnecia Hawkins capped a 29-point game with two free throws with 6.4 seconds left in overtime to complete Mesa Mountain View's 54-52 come-from-behind win over Highland's girls in a 5A Central Region game a the MLK Classic.

Hawkins, a junior who has verabally committed to ASU, scored 20 of her points in the second half with ASU coach Charli Turner Thorne watching at courtside. The Toros Carly Stine made a block and steal late in regulation to turn away Highland chances to take the lead. Mountain View (14-1, 4-0)  trailed by 15 points in the first half and gradually fought its way back. Highland (17-4, 3-1) got 13 points each from Alyssa Heeman and Jordan Hagen and 11 from Kaile Magazzeni. Magazzeni did not score in the second half.

Mountain Pointe bounced back from an East Valley Region loss to Perry last  Friday by topping Skyline, 74-60 in the first boys game of the MLK Classic. Tylor Wimbish scored 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field and Jerome Garrison added 20 points for the Pride (12-6, 4-1). Skyline was led by Angel Ung with 20 points and sophomore Jonathan Sims chipped in with 19 for the Coyotes (8-9, 1-5). Skyline had pulled off an upset of Marcos de Niza last Friday.

Joe Boyd scored 23 points, making 11 of 14 shots from the field, to lead Chaparral to a 70-65 win over St. Mary's. The loss was the Knights eighth in a row. Zeke Chapman added 20 points and Luke Roh chipped in with 14 for the Firebirds (14-5, 2-1 Desert Valley Region). Chris Mason led St. Mary's (7-10, 0-3) with 15 points.
