The Mesa Mountain View girls basketball team settled in for a three-game week starting Monday and capped it with a third victory on Friday.

After a slow start  the Lady Toros used a strong second quarter to distance themselves from visiting Dobson and post a 56-40 win at Toro Gym.

Mountain View improved to 16-1, 6-0 in the 5A Central with the victory. Wins over Highland on Monday, Basha on Tuesday and Dobson made a clean sweep of the rest of the region's best teams.

"Dobson is a pesky team," Mountain View  coach Henry Bribiescas said. "They are scramblers. They get out there and make you work. They made us work very hard for this one."

Junior guard Arnecia Hawksin put the finishing touches on a strong week with 20 points. Hawkins averaged 22 points a game over the three contests. Sophomore point guard Rene Coggins chipped in with 18 points. She gave Mountain View some big baskets taking advantage of openings in the second half  with four aggressive layups in halfcourt sets.

Mountain View got a quick 5-0 lead and then watched as turnovers mounted and Dobson tallied 10 consecutive points for a 10-5 lead. The Lady Toros scrambled to knot the score by quarter's end at 10. After eight first-quarter turnovers, Mountain View handled the ball and pressure much better and outscored the cold-shooting Lady Mustangs, 22-10, in the second quarter.

"They did a good job defensively," Dobson coach Tyler Dumas said. "They were able to stop us in transition and did not allow us our first looks on offense. We're not patient enough with that sometimes to overcome it."

Dobson (14-8, 3-3) trailed 41-24 midway through the third period. But starting to force turnovers as it did early got the Lady Mustangs closer. The lead was cut to 45-36 with about four minutes remaining. Dobson could have sliced the lead to five, but missed four straight free throws. A pair of late Coggins layups pushed the game out of reach with 1:50 left.

"Playing them you can't let their two best players beat you," Dumas said. "They got a lot of points from them, and easy baskets. It's something we have to learn from playing the Highland's and Mountain View's. You can't simulate what they do. You have to see it and learn from it."

Dobson got 14 points from sophomore guard Katherine Hamilton, its only player to score in double figures. Dobson had a tough shooting night, making 8-of-34 shots through three quarters. The Lady Mustangs made only 2-of-16 in the first period when they outplayed Mountain View and could have opened up a decent-sized lead.
