Prep football: Week 3 Eight-game snapshot

September 11, 2014 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

The ranks of the unbeaten will fall some as this week's snapshot of games features five contests matching teams perfect to date. Here we go:

Seton (2-0) at Snowflake (2-0): The D-IV spotlight shines on this one with Blue Ridge and Show Low off to slow starts. Seton and Snowflake have a common foe at this stage, Estrella Foothills. Seton beat EFH by 11 in it season opener and Snowflake took down EFH last week by 7. Offense is Seton's forte as the Sentinels have put up 94 points thus far. Senior running back Antonio Campanella is a handful in his third varsity season. Campanella has led Seton in rushing as a sophomore and junior. Senior quarterback Zach Wade accounted for 259 yards and four TDs last week (three passing). Wade backed up Kyle Johnson last year. Snowflake is rolling behind running back Trevor McCray and quarterback Tyler Claridge. The defense is led by Lane Penrod. Snowflake won last year's game scoring a late TD for a 28-23 win.

Hamilton (2-0) at Pinnacle (2-0): Hamilton has bolted from the gate with a more high-powered offense to go with defense that remains consistent year to year. Pinnacle hasn't been too shabby so far, averaging 40 points a game in its two contests. Easily the best test for both to date. Hamilton is led by Kyler Burke, Ari Johnson, Brandon Krcilek and efficient play at quarterback from James Sosinski. Pinnacle features dual-threat quarterback Brian Lewerke and versatile two-way threat Cules Rose. Hamilton escaped with a 24-20 win last year.

Boulder Creek (2-0) at Desert Vista (1-1): Boulder Creek and new coach Brandon Willard are psyched after opening with a pair of wins over Mesa Mountain View and Westview. Last year the Jaguars lost to both to open the season. Desert Vista missed the playoffs last year, but looks to be improved with a touchdown loss to unbeaten Basha and last week's rout of North. Running back TJ Roberts has been the focal point of the offense with a pair of 100-yard games in as many outings. The passing game is a work in progress and needs improvement to take the heat off Roberts. Boulder Creek is fine at the quarterback position with junior Gunther Johnson accounting for 429 yards and five touchdowns in the upset of Westview last week. Boulder Creek knocked off Desert Vista, 17-3, in their 2013 meeting.

Coolidge (2-0) at Fountain Hills (2-0): Playmakers aren't in short supply for these teams as they look to keep perfect records intact. Coolidge has plenty of firepower with seninor quarterback Dominick Ellis lighting in up on the ground and in the air. Ellis and junior running back Charles McCarty combined for 1,750 yards last season and 24 TDs. McCarty missed last week's game. In his stead James Brown has picked up the slack on the ground. McCarty should be in the lineup this week. Fountain Hills quarterback Luke McDermott is off to a fast start. He passed for 337 yards and four TDs in last week's win over Florence. Coolidge knocked off Fountain Hills, 27-14, last year in Coolidge.

Tempe Prep (1-1) at Northwest Christian (2-0): Tempe Prep managed to shrug off a four-touchdown loss to Yuma Catholic in its opener by visiting D-IV Show Low and rallying big-time in the second half to beat the host Cougars. Northwest Christian has been stingy in two games allowing just two touchdowns and scoring 45 points in wins over Valley Christian and Scottsdale Christian. NWC and Tempe Prep met twice last season with NWC winning via shutout in early Sept. They met again in the opening round of the playoffs and Tempe Prep returned the favor to bring an abrupt end to the Crusaders season. Tempe Prep is battle tested based on its first two opponents so NWC certainly will be wary, especially with the playoff loss fresh in its mind.

Chandler (2-0) at Valor Christian, Colo. (3-0): Chandler made an out-of-state trip last year and tangled with a legitimate power in St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif). The Wolves couldn't hang for four quarters and lost by three touchdowns. This year it's another out-of-state trip in Week 3, this time to Highlands Ranch, Colo., to face Valor Christian, Colorado's defending big-school champ. Chandler played its front-liners sparingly in recording an easy win over Buena last week. That should leave the Wolves re-focused and re-energized for this contest and the out-of-state bragging rights that go with it. Bryce Perkins and Chase Lucas look to solve Valor Christian's defense. Valor Christian has reloaded on offense andlis led by quarterback Parker Courier and running backs Tanner Tadra and Stone Watson.

Canyon del Oro (2-0) at Ironwood Ridge (2-1): These district foes have developed a great rivalry that's swung Ironwood Ridge's way the last three years, including a 42-14 Ironwood Ridge victory last year on CDO soil. Both teams excel on the ground with Ironwood Ridge relying on Cole McLafferty and CDO riding the ball-carrying skills of Max Smith, Both backs are averaging better than 100 yards rushing per game. The schools have met seven times in the last 10 years, including each of the last five. IRWR holds a 4-3 edge in that span.

Arizona Lutheran Academy (2-0) vs. Joy Christian (2-0) at North Canyon HS: Like Tempe Prep-NWC, this figures to be entertaining and high scoring. Neither team has been pushed thus far in its two wins. ALA blanked Joy Christian in the second half of last year's matchup to nab a 52-28 win. ALA has virtually all its firepower from last year back and they've picked up where they left off. Quarterback Cameron Haag, running backs Jesse Zwick and James Farley and receivers Gabe Galvan and Brady Cook are lethal. Haag passed for 400 yards and seven TDs in the meeting last year with 337 of those yards to Galvan and Cook (and all 7 TDs). Galvan and Cook have nine TD catches between them in two games this year. Joy Christian relies on Tonka Watson and Godfrey Mudavanhu on the ground with Mudavanhu the top target of efficient quarterback Matt Mitchell (9 TDs, 0 interceptions).
