Busy weekend of non-football events for Sept. 19-20 in East Valley

The most comfortable place to be this weekend may be inside with another flurry of precipitation expected. One stop that should be comfortable is the Tournament of Champions Volleyball Invitational hosted by Westwood, Mesa High, Skyline and Highland.

The Westwood TOC begins Friday Sept. 19 at noon and continues through Saturday Sept. 20 to the finals in late afternoon. Thirty-six schools comprise the field divided into four pools of nine schools each. The favorites appear to be Desert Vista (5-0) and Hamilton (4-0), both of whom are unbeaten thus far this season. Hamilton is the defending champion and defeated Desert Vista in last year's title match.

Westwood Pool: Desert Vista, Campo Verde, Mountain Ridge, Prescott, Thunderbird, Desert Ridge, McClintock, North, Westwood. Mesa High Pool: Horizon, Perry, Basha, Mesa, Marcos de Niza, Florence, Thatcher, Apache Junction, Red Mountain. Highland Pool: Sunnyslope, Gilbert, Highland, Queen Creek, Pinnacle, Liberty, Desert Mountain, Dobson, Cibola. Skyline Pool: Hamilton, Chaparral, Corona del Sol, Ironwood, Deer Valley, Mesa Mtn. View, Saguaro, Canyon del Oro, Skyline.

The top two teams from each pool advance to the Gold Division with bracket play commencing on Saturday at approximately 1 p.m. Gold Division play is at Westwood High. The second, third and fourth tiers of  teams based  on pool play records will reorganize at Mesa High, Highland and Skyline for further bracket play.

Cross country features a couple of meets on East Valley turf with the long-running Ojo Rojo (26th annual) hosted by Chandler High at Tumbleweed Park and the inaugural King of the Mountain hosted by Red Mountain at Arizona Golf Resort. Twenty-nine teams are in the field for Ojo Rojo and 16 teams have signed on for King of the Mountain. Race times for Ojo Rojo: are 8:20 a.m. freshman boys, 8:21 freshman girls, 9 a.m. varsity girls, 9:30 varsity boys, 10:10 open boys and 10:11 open girls. Race times for King of the Mountain: 6:30 a.m. freshman boys and girls; 6:50 a.m. non-varsity boys and girls and 7:10 varsity boys and girls. Top five of each gender in each race score so 30 points is perfect score in each race, 90 is perfect for the three races combined.

View, Red Mountain, Skyline, Trevor Browne, Veritas, Westwood.

Chandler High hosts it annual Wolves Swim and Dive meet (diving on Tuesday Sept. 16 and Wednesday Sept. 17) and swimming events on Saturday Sept. 20. Boys diving competiton begins at 9:30 am. on Tuesday at Chandler High Acquatics Center and girls diving is set for 9:30 a.m on Wednesday Sept. 17. Swimming events begin Saturday Sept. 20 at 9 a.m. Also on Saturday Sept. 20, Westwood High hosts the Mesa Relays at Kino Junior High Pool. Events begin at 9 a.m. Schools entered are Desert Ridge, McClintock, North, Dobson, Mesa, Mountain View, Red Mountain, Skyhline and Westwood.
