No joke: teams score 170 combined points

October 11, 2014 by Jose Garcia, AZPreps365

95-75.

It wasn’t a basketball score.

It was a football score.

And it is not a misprint.

We don’t know if Higley and Apache Junction were on fall break this week, but their defenses sure were. When reached by phone late Friday night, Higley coach Eddy Zubey was questioning whether his team really won despite giving up 75 points.

“I’m happy,” he said. “I’m offensive line coach also, and the offensive coaches are happy. But the defensive coaches want to stick hot needles in their eyes. They are bummed.”

Imagine what the Apache Junction coaches are feeling.

But it sounds like they at least had fun.

“It was definitely an exciting game,” Apache Junction head coach Vance Miller said.

The halftime score was 47-43 in favor of Apache Junction, but, despite the final score and the more than 1,600 yards of offense that was accumulated, Apache Junction only scored seven points in the third quarter.

Talk about a football buzzkill.

Here are more unofficial stats from the game and new state records:

--Higley quarterback Mason Crossland completed 23 of 31 for 638 yards and a new Class 4A state record nine touchdowns. The passing total is one yard off the state record.

---The 95 points Higley scored is a new 4A state record and so is the 856 yards it totaled.

---Apache Junction had 46 first downs and Higley 27.

---Apache Junction quarterback Adam Abbatacola passed for 526 yards and threw eight touchdowns and rushed for two.

After the work they put in Friday night, the Higley scoreboard operator and stat guys might have to get tested for carpal tunnel.

The head coaches for each team probably didn’t get any sleep, but they’ll join us Saturday during the AZPreps365 radio show between 9-11 a.m. on 98.7 FM to talk about Friday’s wild game.
