Prep football Week 8 eight-game snap shot

October 16, 2014 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

This week's slate under the microscope features five unbeaten teams (Westwood, Moon Valley, Alhambra, Boulder Creek and Seton) and nine with winning streaks of five games or more (add Horizon, Dobson, Ironwood Ridge, Chaparral). All but one of the teams in these matchups remains in the postseason hunt. Here's this week's games, all on Friday Oct. 17:

Moon Valley (7-0) at Alhambra (7-0): Last year's meeting -- Alhambra 47, Moon Valley 26 -- Two of three schools in their Division III section who are 7-0 at this stage (Tempe High is the other). They trade off playing one another the last three weeks. Moon Valley has made strides going from a 4-6 team last year; Alhambra the same was 6-4 in 2013. The Rockets couldn't hang with Alhambra last year, but believe they can make it close or better. Moon Valley is led by quarterback Shannon Burton. Burton has run and thrown for a combined 2,012 yards and 28 touchdowns (15 rushing and 13 passing) and accounted for more than 300 yards in the loss last year. Alhambra is old school pretty much disdaining the pass. The Lions average 425 yards rushing per game and use a fistfull of backs. The best of the bunch is Lakel Davis, who has 763 yards and 16 TDs. Davis rushed for 208 in last year's win over the Rockets. Marquis Bray isn't bad either, adding 666 yards and 10 TDs.

Horizon (6-1) at Boulder Creek (7-0): Last year's meeting -- Horizon 48, Boulder Creek 24 -- Horizon is on a six-game winning streak after dropping its opener to Marcos de Niza. The Huskies still give up their share of points, but not enough  their offense can't bail them out. Boulder Creek is the only unbeaten team in D-I. The Jaguars have won three of its games by a touchdown or less. The Jags will have to be sharp on defense to slow Horizon's prolific offense. Horizon QB Dalton Sneed is having another good year throwing and leads the Huskies in rushing. Sneed accounted for 449 yards of offense in beating Boulder Creek last year. Boulder Creek is led by QB Gunther Johnson (nearly 2,000 yards of offense), running back Blake Dawson (a 1,000-yard rusher) and receiver Troy Reed ( 643 yards and 11 TDs).

Westwood (7-0) at Marcos de Niza (4-3): Last year's meeting -- Marcos de Niza 37, Westwood 13 -- It's a three-team race for the D-II, Section II title among Poston Butte, Westwood and Marcos. Marcos must win this one to keep its section-title hopes alive after last week's loss to Poston Butte. Westwood was pushed to the brink last week to win its ninth game in a row dating back to last season. A Warriors' win makes for a likely section-title showdown the final week with Poston Butte.

Combs (5-2) at Seton (7-0): Last year's meeting -- Seton 55, Combs 17 -- Combs finds itself in a tough spot to advance to postseason after losing last week to Florence and dropping to No. 17 in the latest D-IV power rankings. Seton is No. 1 in D-IV, devouring its opposition and isn't likely to be sympathetic to Combs' need to win out. Seton battered a top-5 D-IV foe (Coolidge) last week, cementing its stake as the top team in D-IV. Combs must win at least two of its final three games to have a shot at postseason. The Coyotes finish with two more road games (Amphitheater and Coronado) -- contests that may not help much in the power rankings.

Dobson (5-2) at Desert Vista (1-6): Last year's meeting -- Desert Vista 21, Dobson 10 -- Dobson's five-game winning streak has injected some playoff fever to southwest Mesa. This is the Mustangs' best chance at a win the final three weeks with Brophy and Mountain Pointe their final two opponents. Dobson is No. 16 in D-I power rankings this week. Desert Vista has dropped five of its last six games. The Thunder have played a rugged schedule with as many as six of its first seven opponents likely headed to the playoffs in D-I or D-II. Dobson is assured a .500 season, which would be its best since 2007.

Ironwood Ridge (6-1) at Marana Mtn. View (4-3): Last year's meeting -- Marana Mtn. View 14, Ironwood Ridge 7 -- Ironwood Ridge is rolling with a six-game winning streak as it  prepares for this one. Ironwood Ridge's only loss was the season opener to D-II No. 1 Liberty, 24-20. The Nighthawks have played well pretty much every week and need to keep that going with games vs. Salpointe and Vista Grande still to go. Ironwood Ridge has several backs carrying its ground-oriented attack led by junior Cole McLafferty (695 yards, 9 TDs) and senior Mike Franzese (438 yards, 7 TDs). Four backs have combined for 1,700 yards and 25 TDs for the Nighthawks. Marana Mtn. View thrives on the pass with QB Justice Summerset (2,042 yards, 17 TDs, 4 picks) looking often for playmakers Jeff Cotton and Stan Berryhill. Cotton and Berryhill have a combined 68 receptions for 1,168 yards and 10 TDs.

Chaparral (6-1) vs. Brophy Prep (5-3) at Camelback HS: Last year's meeting -- Chaparral 44, Brophy 10 -- These are two hot teams. D-II Chaparral has won six in a row and D-I Brophy Prep four straight after a 1-3 beginning. Chaparral's lone loss is to Saguaro and Brophy's losses are to Bishop Gorman, Hamilton and Centennial. Chaparral will be without veteran quarterback Sean Paul Brophy, who may be done for the season with a broken clavicle suffered last week against Arcadia. The Firebirds will go with sophomore Grayson Barry in Brophy's place. Brophy Prep is thriving in the power rankings thanks to its heavy schedule. The Broncos 4-6 mark a year ago earned them a playoff berth and they've done better this year. Gritty quarterback Cade Knox continues to play well with 1,500 yards passing, 17 TDs and only four interceptions. Knox has weapons in WR Isaiah Oliver, TE Streator Bates and RB Ryan Velez to help him out. Velez rushed for 106 yards and two TDs in the victory over Mtn. Pointe last week.

Williams Field (2-1) at Queen Creek (6-1): Last year's meeting (regular season) -- Williams Field 42, Queen Creek 17 -- Both schools have suffered their only loss on the field in the last two weeks bowing to Saguaro. This has become a grudge match with both schools consistently in D-III title talk. Queen Creek got revenge in the playoffs last year with a 31-28 victory. Queen Creek features efficient Bryce Dobbs at quarterback when the Bulldogs opt to throw (975 yards, 7 TDs and two picks), but does its damage on the ground via Weston Barlow. Barlow has rushed for 1,006 yards in six games. He did not play vs. Higley, was limited to a season-low 41 yards against Saguaro and got just three carries in a rout of South Mountain last week. Barlow  rushed for 186 and 179 yards in the two meetings with Williams Field last year. Williams Field's offense revolves around RB Braedyn Bushman, who is averaging  just less than 200 yards rushing per game. Bushman (1,390 yards) has scored 19 TDs. The game is critical to Williams Field, No. 14 in the power rankings), since at present only six of its games will count toward its push to postseason due to four forfeits from August and September. Williams Field is set to appeal those forfeits to the AIA next week.
