Marana Rattler Invitational

Saturday, October 18

Marana High School hosted the 13th Annual Valerie McGregor Rattler Invitational on Saturday morning. The Rattler was run on the same course that will host the sectionals for Division II/Section 2, Division III/Section 2 and Division IV/Section 3 on November 1.

A seeded race was held for both boys and girls due to the amount of teams entered and Rio Rico senior Carlos Villarreal won with a time of 14:50.55. Salpointe senior Nathan Thomas came in second with a time of 15:08.31 and Sabino senior Sawyer Sprung came in third with a time of 15:12.29.

Villarreal came in second at the Division III state meet last fall.

On the girl's side, Canyon del Oro senior Bridgette Doucet gave another exceptional performance with a time of 17:07.49.  Rio Rico sophomore Allie Schadler came in second with a time of 17:26.22 and Buena sophomore Morgan Woodman came in third with a time of 17:58.24.

Doucet came in second in the state D-II race her sophomore year and looks to be the odds on favorite to take in all this year. Schadler was the D-III state champion last year.

Xavier took the girl's team title with 38 points followed by Catalina Foothills (69) and Vista Grande (128). Gila Ridge win the boy's title with 91 points, Rio Rico came in second (03) and Brophy took third (110).

All six runners mentioned ran a National Elite time as did Rincon's Lauren Phillips (18:13.73).

STATE QUALIFYING:

Each Sectional race will qualify the top 50% of the full teams (more than 5) entered on athletic.net and from their Section. Teams must be entered by the deadline date of Monday, October 28, 2013. If a Section has an odd number of entered teams the number of qualifying teams will be rounded up. Example: 11 Sectional teams entered on athletic.net will qualify 6 teams.

Each Sectional race will qualify the top 25 finishers regardless of their team’s placement. Example: If all of the top 25 finishers are members of an already qualified team then no additional finishers will qualify.
