Mesa Sports Hall of Fame to induct class of 2014

The Mesa Sports Hall of Fame Induction for 2014 is set for Monday Nov. 24 at Red Mountain Mountain High featuring eight athletes, a coach and a sports media inductee. Time of the induction is 7 p.m. for the ceremony. Admission is free and it's open to the public.

Selected in the class of 2014 are: Jeri Cameron-Vanyek, Westwood, gymnastics (1979); Jonathan Baker, Mountain View, golf (1984); Dahlia Lockhart,  Mesa High, track, (1987); Julia Leddy, Mountain View, volleyball (1999); Katie Abbott, Westwood, badminton/basketball (2004); Jackie Gonzalez, Westwood, badminton (2004); Lee Cummard, Mesa High, basketball (2004); Chelsea Goodman, Mountain View, volleyball (2004).

Coaching honoree is longtime Westwood girls volleyball coach Steve Crook, who guided the Warriors to the 1994 state title. Special recognition induction goes to Bruce Cooper, Channel 12 sports and a Westwood High graduate for his time spent covering high school athletics in Mesa and the Valley.

Twenty-year championship anniversary teams to be honored this year:  1994 Mountain View girls track, coach Mary Morris; 1994 Mountain View boys track, coach Robbie Robinson; 1994 Red Mountain wrestling, coach Nick Karantinos; 1994 Westwood girls volleyball, coach Steve Crook; 1994 Westwood boys cross country, coach Kyle Sawyer.
