State record tied for threes in a game

All it took was two shots for coach Scott Timmer to sense that Kaitlyn Bellerson was about to treat her Valley Christian basketball team and herself to a special night.

“After Kaitlyn’s second shot went it,” said Timmer about Wednesday’s game, “I turned to (co-head coach) Al Nelson and said that the shot was so pure and effortless that something special could happen.”

Timmer was spot on just as Bellerson.

Injuries to two wing players kept Bellerson in the game, and she made the most of her time on Sedona Red Rock’s floor. The junior sharpshooter tied an all-class state record for 3-pointers made in a game with 13 during her team’s 61-33 win.

Window Rock’s 1994-95 team member Henrietta Wagner was the only other Arizona high school girls basketball player to tally that many threes in a game. The 13 threes also is the fourth highest total ever recorded nationally in a girls high school game.

Eight players, not including Wagner, have also converted that many nationally. For the night, Bellerson was 13 for 20 from beyond the arc, where she scored 39 of her career high 41 points.
