It took nearly three quarters for Mesa Mountain View to get a lead against Horizon Thursday night, but once the Lady Toros pulled ahead they wasted little time pulling away.

Seniors Armanii Hawkins and Tennille Heywood combined for 23 points in the second half to pace Mountain View to a come-from-behind 58-41 win over Horizon in a Division I game at Mountain View.

Hawkins, a senior and ASU-bound this fall, found a rhythm offensively in the second half scoring 14 of her game-high 20 points. Heywood, the Lady Toros point guard, got off just two shots in the first half and was scoreless. She got more oportunities after intermission, scoring all nine of her points the final 16 minutes. Heywood's layup with 1:42 left in the third period put Mountain View (11-5, 4-3 prg) ahead to stay, 37-35. Mountain View outscored Horizon 18-4 in the third period and 35-10 in the second half. With two minutes gone in the fourth quarter, Mountain View's lead had grown to 50-35.

Horizon (13-5, 5-2 power-ranking games) has been on a tear the last month winning 12 of 13 games, including the Lady Titan Classic at Arcadia High. Led by guards Leah Goodman and Andrea Easley and some big games from post Katie Grant, the Lady Huskies have gotten used to bulldozing opponents. At halftime with Goodman and Easley leading the way, Horizon was up 31-23 and was in control. Mountain View's answer for the second half?

"We had to pick up the intensity and get some kind of flow going offensively," Mountain View coach Henry Bribiescas said. "We knew their two guards were big scorers, and we didn't do that well the first half containing them."

Goodman and Easley got their share of shots in the second half, but it was a half Horizon would just as soon forget. A combination of better Mountain View defense and poor marksmanship took a toll on the Lady Huskies. Goodman and Easley were each 0-for-6 from the field in the third period. Goodman finished with 14 points and Easley managed 13 -- a combined six points in the second half. Grant wasn't a factor the entire game. The 6-foot-3 senior attempted only four shots the first half and two the second half. She finished with four points.

Mountain View's starters did all the scoring save one basket and the final result was balance. Annika Decker finished with 11 points to join Hawkins in double figures. Shauna Bribiescas tallied nine points along with Heywood and Rachel McKay chipped in seven points. Mountain View is on a solid streak of its own of late winning seven of its last eight games after a 4-4 start.

Mountain View returns to action Monday visiting Highland. Horizon will try to rebound Friday with a road game against Desert Mountain.
