Southern Arizona soccer playoff picture not clear yet

January 21, 2015 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365

16 teams from each division qualifies for the state playoffs.  Each section champion (based on section standings) earns an automatic bid.

The first round for each division will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 4. The top four seeds will host a pod although that may change based on travel or other factors.

BOYS DIVISION II

2: Marana Mountain View (S VI)

7: Nogales (S II)

10: Tucson High (S II)

12: Tucson Desert View (S II)

15: Oro Valley Canyon del Oro (S VI)

18: Oro Valley Ironwood Ridge (S VI)

21: Tucson Salpointe (S II)

23: Tucson Catalina Foothills (S VI)

Since each section earns an automatic bid the top teams in Section III and Section V are currently out of the top 16 which means the top team from those sections will bump out a top 16 team, making it more difficult for others to make the playoffs.

Section II is still up for grabs between Nogales, Salpointe, Tucson High, Desert View, Sunnyside and Tucson Rincon still in the hunt for the automatic bid.

At this point, Salpointe needs to win their section to make the playoffs which means they are technically in playoff-mode right now. The Lancers play Nogales and Tucson this week.

Section VI is coming down to the final match. Mountain View is already in the playoffs due to their high ranking but they can solidify that with a section championship. If the Mountain Lions win the section, Catalina Foothills and Ironwood Ridge might not make the playoffs.

Tony Jensen has quietly made Mountain View one of the top teams in the state.  Huge week.  Odd to see Canyon del Oro, Ironwood Ridge, Salpointe and Catalina Foothills on the verge of not making the playoffs.

BOYS DIVISION III

3: Tucson Amphitheater (S III)

4: Tucson Palo Verde (S III)

8: Thatcher (S V)

10: Safford (S V)

12: Sahuarita (S III)

15: Sahuarita Walden Grove (S III)

17: Tucson Catalina (S III)

20: Rio Rico (S III)

Division III is still wide open with every match making or breaking a team's season till next Friday. Even Catalina has a shot at winning their section which means a wild finish.

GIRLS DIVISION II

2: Tucson High (S II)

5: Catalina Foothills (S VI)

6: Tucson Sahuaro (S II)

11: Salpointe (S II)

15: Ironwood Ridge (S VI)

17: Tucson Sabino (S II)

With the Section V leaders out of the top 16, teams need to get into the top 15 to make the playoffs.  Tucson High plays Sahuaro and Salpointe to end the season. Catalina Foothills will play Ironwood Ridge on Friday with the winner penciled in as section champion.

If Ironwood Ridge wins they are section champs but Catalina Foothills would have to win one more.  Salpointe getting in is a great story.

GIRLS DIVISION III

1: Walden Grove (S III)

4: Rio Rico (S III)

6: Sahuarita (S III)

10: Nogales (S III)

11: Tucson Pueblo (S III)

12: Tucson Tanque Verde (S VI)

13: Palo Verde (S III)

14: Safford (S V)

24: Oro Valley Pusch Ridge (S VI)

Walden Grove plays both Sahuarita and Rio Rico to end the season. either way, Section III is the most difficult in the state with five teams in the playoff picture.

Pusch Ridge can sneak in with a win over Tanque Verde in Section VI. Amazing final week.
