D-I girls soccer: No. 15 Chandler stuns No. 2 Xavier, 5-3 in PKs

No. 15 Chandler made a statement few others can boast Tuesday night. The Lady Wolves ventured to No. 2 Xavier and pushed the Gators to overtime scoreless and then to PKs. In the battle of PKs, Chandler prevailed, 5-3.Chandler keeper Julia Byerlein made a save in the fourth frame and followed up with sucessful PK to provid the 5-3 margin.A marquee win to be sure for first-year coach Joe Paulsen. Every other top seed won iin Tuesday's opening round, (well No. 9 Perry edged No. 8 Pinnacle).

Here's a wrap-up of other first-round action:

In a doubleheader at Highland High, No. 5 seed Hamilton and No. 4 seed Highland endured different paths to first-round victories.

Hamilton played the first match of a doubleheader and had to rally in the second half to edge. No. 12 Gilbert, 2-1. Gilbert scored a little more than midway through the first half  on a set piece. Elisha Dietrich, who specializes in the flip thrown-in. tossed it at Madison Stapley who converted for a 1-0 lead that held the rest of the half.

Hamilton managed to even things at 1 with only two minutes gone in the second half. Kylie Miniefield connected on the equalizer. Hamilton had several chances late in the second half to gain the lead, but Gilbert keeper Brandi Alderson made a trio of saves in a six-minute span to frustrate Hamilton.

Finally, Jaimie Salas got a good look 20 yards outand straight away and hammered in what proved to be the match-wiinner in the 73rd minute.

Highland enjoyed a much easier victory in the night cap, blanking Boulder Creek, 3-0. Zorena Hazen scored on a rebound in the 20th minute for the Lady Hawks, who are determined to bounce back from a one-and-done 2014 state tourney. Highland's Bri Hatch beat defenders and the keeper in a scramble for a loose ball at the goal mouth and tapped it in for a 2-0 edge in the 51st minute. Madison Williams capped the shutout with a goal in the 78th minute.

In other first-round matchups, No. 9 Perry avenged its title-match loss last year to No. 8 Pinnacle. The Lady Pumas went to overtime and prevailed 2-1. A goal in the first overtime by Kambree Meskill was the difference. Ashley Dahl also scored for Perry. Other first-round scores, top-seed Desert Mountain 4, No. 16 Millennium 0; No. 3 Desert Vista 1, No. 14 Ironwood 0 in overtime;  No. 7 Corona del Sol 3, No. 10 Willow Canyon 0; No. 6 Chaparral 1, No. 11 Basha 0.
