Committee approves 31 football appeals

The football sports advisory committee approved 31 of the 54 division football appeals that were filed.

Teams that had their appeals denied can still file another appeal, but this time to the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s executive board for a final chance to make their case. Some of the notable appeals that were granted belonged to Queen Creek and Campo Verde, which wanted to move from Division I to Division II.

The appeals of the only schools that wanted to move up a division, Highland (D-II to D-I), Moon Valley (D-IV to D-III, Tempe (D-IV to D-III), also were approved. After listening to every appeal, the 9-member football advisory committee revisited a couple of their votes for competitive balance reasons.

The appeals of Sahuarita and Desert Edge were initially approved but were then denied after a revote.

“What the committee demonstrated was that after looking at all the cases presented to them, they had to revisit a couple of decisions made earlier in the day,” said Brian Bolitho, the AIA’s director of business media. “They did just that by cross-checking the appeals and ultimately making the decision they felt was best for all schools competing in football.”
