D-I girls soccer: No. 15 Chandler strikes again in PKs

February 7, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Chandler's girls soccer team still hasn't scored a postseason goal, but not giving up one either has allowed the Lady Wolves to play the game of chance known as penalty kicks twice. So far, so good.

Goalkeeper Julia Byerlein was the standout for the second match in a row Saturday afternoon as her two saves resulted in Chandler's 4-3 shootout triumph over Corona del Sol in the quarterfinals of the Division I state tournament at Hascall Henshaw Stadium.

Chandler (9-6-1), the No. 15 seed, now has two playoff wins in school history. The Lady Wolves move on to the semis on Thursday Feb. 11 at 5 pm. at Campo Verde HS where they will face No. 3 Desert Vista, a 1-0 winner over No. 6 Chaparral. The other two D-I quarterfinals also were 1-0 outcomes -- No. 4 Highland over No. 5 Hamilton and top-seed Desert Mountain over No. 9 Perry. Highland and Desert Mountain square off Thursday Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Campo Verde HS. Corona del Sol, the No. 7 seed, finished the year 12-5-3.

"We really never got going today," Chandler coach Joe Paulsen said. "Our defense was good. Defense wins games and character wins championship. I thought we showed a lof of character. We had couple starters ready to play we weren't sure we were going to have. One was in a car accident, but she was cleared..... We've gotten it done with PKs."

Byerlein, a senior, made a save and followed it booting home the decisive PK in Tuesday's 5-3 shootout upending of No. 2 Xavier. On Saturday, Byerlein stopped Corona's first PK and clinched the win with a second save on Corona's fifth attempt. Had that fifth attempt been successful, Byerlein was Chandler's fifth shooter. Chandler players who connected on PKs in the shootout were Gabrielle Enns, Kelsey Denny, Kamy Kjerstad and Ruby Valencia.

"I was glad it ended when it did," Byerlein said. "I stayed calm and tried doing the same thing I did (Tuesday). I didn't guess.  It worked out."

Corona del Sol, no stranger to overtime/shootout matches this season playing inits fifth, including three of its last four outings. had more good chances to score to score than Chandler. Byerlein had three or four very good saves on Corona attempts, one in the fourth minute off a Corona corner kick and one in the 73rd minute after Corona's  Izzie Cartagena came free from about 15-20 yards out. Byerlein dove to her right and snared the shot that wasn't quite squared up. Chandler had some opportunities, but none requiring a a dynamic save. The Lady Wolves, however, were spot on again in PKs. They are 9-for-9 in shootout-PK attempts in two matches.

"Chandler was exactly who we thought they were," Corona coach Matt Smith said. "They play good defense and they have a strong keeper. We wanted to get one early and had a couple chances. We didn't convert one. I thought we struck five good PKs, but their keeper made two great saves."
