D-II girls soccer: Notre Dame tames Campo Verde for title in PKs

Notre Dame Prep's girls soccer team didn't bludgeon its four foes the last two weeks in winning the Division II state championship. The Lady Saints, however, didn't have to. When your team allows just one goal in all those matches you have a good chance of prevailing.

Becoming adept this postseason in matches that advance to a shootout, No. 1 seed Notre Dame won in that fashion for the third time in four tries on Saturday downing No. 11 Campo Verde, 4-2, in kicks to claim the school's second title in the sport. The match was played at the perennial site of the state soccer finals, Campo Verde High.

Notre Dame keeper Meredith Reinhardt saved two PK attempts in the shootout and Notre Dame clinched the title going 4-for-4 in PKs. The finish was applied by Notre Dame  sophomore forward Taylor Culver, who nestled her attempt securely in the left corner of the net. Culver delivered both goals back in January when the teams met in a section match, won by Notre Dame, 2-0. Reinhardt was in goal in all Notre Dame's playoff games and in all the shootouts. She made key saves in each one.

Notre Dame fniished the season unbeaten with 16-0-6 record under coach Tom White. The Lady Saints bested Flagstaff 2-1 (4-3 PKs) in the opening round, Salpointe, 1-0, in the quarters and Catalina Foothills earlier this week 1-0 (4-3 PKs). Converting kicks along with Culver for Notre Dame were Amanda Furtmann, Dana Gordon and Kassidy Madrigal. Notre Dame previously won a title in 2009 and was runner-up in 2011. Campo Verde (17-6-2) was shooting for its second title in three years as a program in operation just six years. Campo Verde won the D-III title in 2013. Campo Verde also allowed just one goal in four matches. The Lady Coyotes and coach Rosie Headley beat Sahuaro (1-0), Tucson (2-1 in OT) and Verrado (1-0, 3-1 PKS) prior to Saturday.
