Amphi boys, Seton girls have the look of basketball champs

The Amphitheater boys basketball team and the Seton girls basketball team have been models of consistency, in fact, dominant teams in the world of 4A-II hoops this season.

Amphi (25-2) heads into the 4A-II state tournament riding a 13-game winning streak. The Panthers haven't lost  since late December and the closest any team has come to beating them during their win streak is 13 points. Its only losses are to 5A-I Salpointe (without Derksen) and to 5A-II Chaparral. They beat three 5A schools in the VisitMesa.com tourney in late December.

The Lester Medford-Tim Derksen led Panthers should have no trouble reaching the 4A-II final on Feb. 26 at Jobing.com Arena. Their opponent that day should be one of Arcadia, Tempe or Thunderbird.

Seton (25-3) also has won its last 13 games and hasn't lost since Dec. 22. Two of its three losses are to California teams in the NIke Tournament of Champions I and the other came against 5A-I Highland. Seton has beaten seven teams in the 4A-II girls state bracket, including top-seed Flagstaff and No. 3 seed Cactus.

The defending 4A-II champion Sentinels, led by seniors Theresa Wirth and Kayla Bustos, shouldn't have any trouble reaching the semifinals. If games play out as they should, Seton would meet Cactus in the semis. The tougher half of the bracket is the top with Flagstaff, No. 4 Page and No. 5 Thunderbird. Page likely will have to beat Thunderbird and Flag to make the title on Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. at Jobing.com Arena. A final four of Flagstaff-Page and Cactus-Seton has a solid chance of happening. Flag or Page has the best chance of unseating Seton.
