Corona del Sol’s Alex Barcello picked up Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors Friday morning.

The sophomore guard led his team to a 33-1 record and Division I title this season, helping the program win its fourth consecutive state title.

“In my opinion, Alex is the best basketball player in Arizona,” said Central High coach Darren Bustos in a press release sent by Gatorade. “On the court, he demonstrated good sportsmanship and more importantly is a terrific basketball player. He is very skilled and truly understands the fundamentals of the game.”

Barcello averaged 19.9 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and shot 65 percent from inside the arc during the 2014-15 season.

Casey Benson (2012-13), Donnell Knight (1998-99) and Doug Harris (1989-90) also won Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year honors while playing for Corona del Sol.
