D-I baseball roundup: #12 Mtn. Ridge continues to roll

Mountain Ridge apparently didn't fancy another low-scoring game in its currrent Division I state tournament run.

After posting a pair of one-run wins in single-elimination rounds, the 12th-seeded Mountain Lions pounded out 15 hits and blasted No. 4 Gilbert, 9-2, in the third round of the D-I baseball tournament at Diablo Stadium.

Mitchel Sullivan, who knocked in the winning run that rallied Mountain Ridge to a 3-2 victory over Horizon on Tuesday, went 4-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead the offense. Tristan Thomas and Matthew Dyer also drove in two runs while Alex Roth and Cam Cannon had an RBI each.

Their prowess at the plate was more than enough support for Tommy Lowe and Josh Sieglitz, who combined on a five-hitter. Lowe went 5 1/3 innings and gave up both runs (unearned) and struck out six. Sieglitz, who picked up a win in the first tournament game in relief of Lowe in a 2-1 win over North Canyon, didn not allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings. Mountain Ridge tagged three Gilbert pitchers and scored off each one  -- starter Zach Meyer, Cole Williams and Connor Sheridan.

Mountain Ridge plays next in a winner's bracket game against Hamilton on Monday May 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Diablo.  Gilbert faces Corona del Sol on Saturday May 9 at 4 p.m. at Diablo in an elimination game.

No. 1 HAMILTON 4, No. 9 CORONA DEL SOL 1: Zach Pederson tossed a three-hitter and the Huskies scored three runs in the first to pace a victory over Corona del Sol at Diablo Stadium. Dom Castro, Nick Brueser and Drew Swift drove in runs for Hamilton. Pederson walked three and struck out one as he continued his postseason mastery from last season. Eric Schawalbe took the loss for Corona del Sol.

No. 2 MESQUITE 2, No. 10 CENTENNIAL 1: Nick Daley's single with two out in the bottom of the seventh drove in the winning run as the Wildcats nipped the pesky Coyotes at Maryvale Stadium. Jake Suddreth pitched six strong innings and as Mesquite's starter. The win went to Josh Webster, who pitched the seventh. Centennial's Chaz Montoya, who won Centennial's first playoff game last Saturday pitching a shutout  vs. Mountain Pointe, deserved better. Both runs Montoya allowed were unearned. He struck out 10 and didn't walk a batter.

Mesquite moves on to the winner's bracket to against Liberty on MondayMay 11 at 4 p.m. at Diablo. Centennial faces Valley Vista in an elimination game at 6:30 p.m. at Maryvale Stadium. Liberty  won the other D-I elite eight first-round game, edging Valley Vista, 7-6, in eight innings.
