Lady Hoops Extravaganza on display June 12-13

June 11, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Schools from three divisions with plenty of returning firepower from last season square off Friday June 12 and Saturday June 13 at the 2nd annual Lady Hoops Extravaganza at Red Mountain High School.

Eight teams, all who qualified for their respective state tournaments with many going deep, are entered. Games begin Friday at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. with matchup games followed by the start of bracket play at 7 and 8 respectively. Teams competing are top-seed Valley Vista; No. 2 Hamilton; No. 3 Seton Catholic; No. 4 Cactus Shadows; No. 5 Mesquite; No. 6 Millennium; No. 7 Valley Christian and No. 8 Red Mountain.

Here's a glance at the teams. It's possible not all players mentioned are competing due to other events, injuries, etc:

No. 1. Valley Vista -- Valley Vista won 25 games last year and graduated one starter. The Lady Monsoon lost in the D-I quarterfinals to eventual runner-up Millennium. Kiara Edwards and Taylor Chavez both averaged in double figures last year, but scoring balance was the team's forte. Valley Vista surrendered just 38 points a game.

No. 2 Hamilton -- Hamilton has a new head coach in Trevor Neider, who moved over from Mountain Pointe to guide the Lady Huskies. Neider has plenty to work with from a team that won 23 games and bowed to eventual D-I champ Dobson in the quarterfinals. Guards Makayla Filiere, Payton Whitmore and post Maya Banks are a solid nucleus.

No. 3 Seton Catholic -- Four of five starters return and none are seniors for last year's D-II runner-up and the prior two seasons champs. Seton won 29 games a year ago and features sophomore Sarah Barcello and juniors Jenn and Lee Anne Wirth and Liz Holter. The latter trio have two years varsity experience and Barcello one. Barcello was the leading scorer at 15 points a game as a freshman.

No. 4 Cactus Shadows -- This team was young last year and managed 23 wins. A loss in the round of 16 was a bit disappointing, but that loss came vs. Ironwood Ridge which advanced to semis before falling to eventual champ Maricopa. The Lady Falcons return 6-1 sophomore Caitlin Bickle, who averaged 14 points a game in 2014-15.

No. 5 Mesquite -- Two years in a row back at a high level and more should be on the way with sophomores Lindsay VanAllen and Shayla Gonzales on board and a roster that lost one senior. Mesquite has held its own with elite teams lst season and will take a backseast to few if any this coming campaign. Mesquite won 21 games last year and lost in the quarterfinals to Desert Vista.

No. 6 Millennium -- Millennium made deep runs -- D-I quarters in 2014 and D-I finals in 2015 -- but is down to one marquee player due to graduation. That one is a pretty good one in senior point guard Raina Perez. Coach Cory Rojeck will see if the program has players ready to step up and fill solid roles of parting seniors.  The Lady Tigers piled up 28 wins and were eliminated from each of the last two years by Dobson.

No. 7 Valley Christian -- It seems the Lady Trojans are always young and always good. Two of their standouts are not seniors yet. Juniors Megan Timmer and Bethany Wolph are double-figure scorers returning. Valley Christian won 30 games last season and was the top seed at the D-III state tourney. VC lost its only game of the season in the quarters to eventual runner-up Tuba City and bowed the year before in the final to Fountain Hills. The Lady Trojans had several nice wins a year ago vs. many teams from other divisions, including a triumph over Mesquite.

No. 8 Red Mountain -- The tournament host lost one senior to graduation and features two solid players in Seneca Richards and Payden Fulton.  The Lady Lions reached the D-I playoffs and had a one-game stay. A stronger year is expected and the tournament field will provide ample competition for coach Martin Appel and his troops.
