Oct. 22-23 football at a glance

October 20, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Doesn't get any better than a 1 vs. 2 meeting in Week 9 and on a Thursday night no less. Division II No. 1 Skyline plays host to No. 2 Williams Field essentially for the section title and perhaps the top seed at state when the playoffs begin Nov. 6. On Friday No. 3 Queen Creek and No. 4 Westview matchup in D-II

Those aren't the only juicy pairings of the week. Division IV has two section titles on the line in games matching unbeaten teams while Chandler shoots for a sixth consecutive win after sitting last week with a bye in D-I. Here's a peek at eight games of note. Rankings are up-to-date in respective divisions:

THURSDAY OCT. 22

No. 2 (D-II) Williams Field (7-1, 3-0) at  No. 1 (D-II) Skyline (8-0, 3-0): Williams Field hasn't been as dominant on the way to its polished record as Skyline has, but then Skyline dropped down from D-I to D-II this season while Williams Field moved up from D-III. Williams Field came back several times last week in beating Mesa High, doing it the hard way with a 51-yard field goal in the final minute. Two of Williams Field's last three wins have come in the final minute. Skyline features one of the better 1-2 punches in its backfield in Amarii' Keyes and Kaleb Hardin. Coyotes quarterback TJ Duarte and diminutive receiver Manny Ruiz can sting the opposition if it focuses too much on Keyes and Hardin. Duarte was 4-for-6 passing last week for 195 yards (nearly 50 yards per completion) and three TDs. Williams Field is ground-oriented with Aaron Mason and Evan Price doing most of the damage. Wide receiver Justis Stokes is capable of big plays on both sides of the ball.

FRIDAY OCT. 23

No. 8  (D-I) Desert Vista (5-3, 0-3) at No. 6 (D-I) Desert Ridge (6-2, 2-1): Desert Vista tries to end a two-game skid and nab its first D-I Section III win. The Thunder were on bye last week and should be eager to jump back in the fray after home losses to Mountain Pointe and Red Mountain. Desert Ridge pulled out a gutty win last week turning a 20-0 deficit into a 24-20 victory at Red Mountain. Desert Ridge has two superb playmakers in Tavian Patrick and Jalen Harris, who showed why in its second-half comeback. Coach Jeremy Hathcock has settled on one quarterback going forward, allowing junior CJ Fowler to go solo the rest of the way barring injury.

No. 3 (D-I) Chandler (7-1, 2-0) at No. 7 (D-I) Brophy (5-3, 1-1): Chandler brings a six-game winning streak to Phoenix College and has been challenged only once in that stretch (Chaparral). Brophy has made a habit of playing tight games and would love to keep this one close. Brophy's last five games have been decided by a TD or less. The Broncos are 2-3 in those games. It will be a tall order and perhaps more difficult if Chandler has the services of Chase Lucas, who may get back to action after missing essentially the entire season save one half with a knee injury. Chandler has fared well offensively sans Lucas with a combined 2,040 yards rushing from QB Mason Moran and backs TJ Green, Micah Reed-Campos and Anthony Clay. Wide outs N'Keal Harry and Kolby Taylor have combined for 1,300 yards and 13 TDs. Backs Ryan Velez and Noah Pittenger make the Broncos offense go along with quarterback Cade Knox.

No. 4 (D-II) Westview (7-1) at No. 3 (D-II) Queen Creek (6-2): This will be Westview's second look at a D-II foe from the East Valley. The Knights have won seven games in a row since a season-opening loss to Skyline. Westview is on its way to winning its section title provided it tops Millennium in a winner-take-all matchup on Oct. 30. Queen Creek has already sewn up its section title with wins over Ironwood Ridge and Marana Mountain View. Both teams feature 1,000-yard rushers -- Westview has Tyler Vasko (1,487 yards, 12 TDs) and Queen Creek Gavin Danielson (1,154 yards, 11 TDs).

No. 14 (D-II) Corona del Sol (6-2, 1-1) at No. 6 (D-II) Marcos de Niza (7-2, 2-0): These are two old rivals from their days in 5A in the '80s, '90s and early 2000. This will be their first meeting since 2006. Corona won the last three meetings  (2004, 2005 and 2006). Overall success, however, has shifted to Marcos de Niza since their last meeting as the Padres are perennial D-II contenders. Corona is battling for a playoff spot even with its current glossy record. The Aztecs likely need at least a split of their final two games to have a shot at postseason for the first time since 2008. They'll be the underdog and won't get sympathy from Marcos de Niza, which had its seven-game winning streak snapped with last week's loss to Ironwood Ridge.

No. 5 (D-IV) Northwest Christian (8-0, 5-0) at  No. 1 (D-IV) Yuma Catholic (8-0, 5-0): These teams have fashioned a heated rivalry over the last seven years and playing in the same section for the third year in a row adds fuel to the fire. Both schools moved up from D-V to D-IV this season. The fact both are unbeaten should turn up the heat a few more degrees. This will be the 11th time the teams have met since 2009. Passing is the forte offensively for both teams. Northwest Christian coach Dave Innes relies on QB son, Drew, who  has thrown for 1,664 yards and 29 TDs. A trio of receivers have hauled in 1,100 yards and 17 TDs from Drew Innes. Stetson Stallworth, nephew of Yuma Catholic coach Rhett Stallworth, has amassed 2,529 yards and 31 TDs through the air. His prime targets are Brandon Hunter and Jaylen Barnes (1,510 yards and 18 TDs).

No. 14 (D-IV) Combs (4-4, 2-1) at No. 11 (D-IV) Casa Grande (7-1, 3-0): Combs is in the mix for a playoff berth for the third year in a row, but they'll have to come up big to knock off red-hot Casa Grande. Casa Grande has a seven-game winning streak and is on the rise with its move down to D-IV from D-III. The Cougars are in good position for their first playoff berth since 2006 when they competed in 5A (D-I). Casa Grande relies on junior QB Brock Hall (2,247 yards and 29 TDs). Combs must contend with receivers Trevor Russell and Cameron Gardner, who have dogged opponents for 1,504 yards and 24 of the 29 TDs. Combs is best running the ball with senior back Erick Guerra shouldering most of the load and averaging 100 yards a game.

No. 3 (D-IV) Snowflake (8-0, 3-0) at No. 2 (D-IV) Show Low (8-0, 3-0): Snowflake and Show Low have engaged in a healthy rivalry over the years, overshadowed by Show Low's bouts with Blue Ridge. Snowflake narrowly missed winning a D-IV title last year and hasn't missed a beat in trying to get back to the title game this year. Show Low is no stranger to going deep in D-IV playoffs or winning a title. Show Low has reached the D-IV final four six of the last eight years and won two state titles in that span. Show Low is 7-5 in games the teams have played since 2004. Snowflake likes to ground and pound with several backs, led y Zach Solomon. The Lobos can throw if need be with quarterback Tyler Claridge. Claridge passed for a season-high 206 yards and 4 TDs last week. Show Low quarterback Rhett Ricedorff, running back Willie Wyatt and wide out Quentin Clark are the Cougars main weapons. All three clcked last week in a 39-3 win over Blue Ridge. Ricedorff passed for 276 yards and 2 TDs, Wyatt ran for 135 yards and a score and Clark caught seven passes for 118 yards.
