VB: Gilbert stings Hamilton with sweep

October 28, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

There is consensus evident in the Division I volleyball rankings that Xavier, Hamilton, Desert Vista, Sunnyslope and Gilbert are the teams to beat for the 2015 title.

It's harder and harder to know which of the five will win it all. Gilbert added another chapter to that story Wednesday dealing Hamilton a 3-0 defeat on a night the Huskies and Tigers gathered to do more than play the game. Scores were 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19.

Hamilton culminated fund-raising efforts to help the family of cancer-stricken Hamilton player Sierra Guyton, who is battling leukemia. The goal was to raise $5,000 for the Guyton family to help with medical bills and organizers concluded the final amount will go beyond that figure. That was the best news for Hamilton.

On the court, Gilbert played its best match "in a month", according to Gilbert coach Joe Hesse. It's a match he'd love to see several times in the next 10 days to two weeks as the playoffs begin Tuesday Nov. 3.

"Now is a good time to play that way," Hesse said. "We're capable of that, and tough to beat when we serve and hit like we did."

Gilbert likes its serving to set the tone and it certainly did in this match. The Tigers recorded six aces in the opening set -- three in a row by outside hitter Kaitlyn Lines -- that put them ahead to stay in the set, 9-6. Lines had huge game, leading a devastating attack with teammate Makenna Martin. Lines had 20 kills and four aces and Martin picked up 13 kills along with great defense. Setter Sam Boever had 32 assists, land libero Kamryn HIll had 15 digs.

The tandem of Lines and Marti missed few attack other than those that were blocked. Hamilton played the majority of the match out of system, thanks mostly to Gilbert's serve, which was fresh in the mind of Hamilton coach Sharon Vanis.

"I don't think I've seen us play that bad," Vanis said. "We've been playing well. I can't remember us having 7 zero passes (first set). They served us out of the gym. You can't take anything away from Gilbert. They were really good."

Hamilton's struggles continued in the second set, at least for the first half of it. The Huskies caught fire briefly and took their first lead, 15-14. It was 18-14 when they forced Gilbert to a second time out. The final points of the set went Gilbert's way with a Lines' kill, a couple blocks by Krystal Blair and Tiffany Hurd and another Lines' kill. Hamilton survived one set point, but the second ended it -- a service error.

The third set was Gilbert's most dominating. The Tigers broke to a 13-5 lead with Lines and Martin teaming up for eight kills in the first 13 points. Hamilton fought off three match points, but Lines turned out the lights with her 20th kill.

Hamilton didn't have much of a night statistically with junior middle Preslie Anderson leading the attack with eight kills. Anderson was blanked in the first set.

With one power-ranking match to go for each of the top five teams, they all have 14-2 records in power-ranking matches, Of the 10 power-ranking losses the quintet have sustained, nine are to each other:  Xavier (Hamilton and Desert Vista); Hamilton (Desert Vista and Gilbert); Desert Vista  (Sunnyslope and Gilbert); Sunnyslope (Gilbert and Xavier) and Gilbert (Xavier and Basha). Desert Vista put a second loss on Xavier on Wednesday with a 3-1 win over the Gators at Xavier.
