Pima didn't take for granted the 2015 Division VI football title was theirs just because it beat Valley Union handily six weeks ago. And with the start it got in Saturday's championship matchup, the Roughriders left little doubt they'd earn the crown in the rematch.

Pima posted three touchdowns in the game's first seven and a half minutes and went on to a 59-32 triumph to bring the D-VI championship back to southern Arizona for the first time in since 2007 in the game played at Maricopa High School.

Pima's championship was the ninth football title in school history and first since 2005. The Roughriders last title-game appearance came in 2012. The win Saturday also capped a perfect 12-0 season in what may be Pima's last time in D-VI for awhile. Pima should move up to D-V and 11-man football next season. Valley Union finished the year 9-2 with both losses coming to Pima. Valley Union was the last southern Arizona team to win a small school title -- winning in 2007. The last seven titles had gone to schools in the Valley or up north.

Pima quarterback Parker Blair was able to see his career end on a high note with a five-touchdown game -- four  passing and one rushing. Blair's TD tosses were to Jarrett Kartchner, Justin Kartchner, Johny Boren and Curtis Hancock. Running back Hancock left a mark in his finale as well scoring three touchdowns (two on runs and one receiving).

Blair completed 14 of 20 passes for 169 yards. He added 68 yards rushing. Hancock carried 17 times for 127 yards plus two catchers for 60 yards, Blair was satisfied with how his team played, especially the way the game unfolded.

"We made sure not to be overconfident because we beat them earlier," Blair said. "Sometimes this year we haven't gotten off to a good start. Tonight was one of our best."

No kidding. Pima recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff to Valley Union and took possesssion at the Valley Union 24. Three plays later and not even a minute off the clock, Hancock scored on a 4-yard run and ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

More good fortune wasn't far. The ensuing pooch kick wasn't controlled by Valley Union and Pima recovered at the VU 44. Five plays later Blair flipped a screen pass to Hancock, who took it 34 yards to paydirt and a 16-0 lead with 9:41 left in the quarter.

Valley Union finally got a possession and drove to the Pima 26, but the Roughriders made a stop on fourth-and-one to blunt the Blue Devils bid to answer the quick scores.

Instead Pima marched 75 yards in seven plays for a 22-0 advantage. The score was via a Blair to Jarrett Kartchner 10-yard TD pass with 4:27 left in the opening period. Valley Union was never closer than 14 points the rest of the night and only that close twice brieflly in the first half.

"We hoped to get a good jump on them and we did," Pima coach Jace Hancock said. "It felt good to get on top early. We played them earlier and found then they were a tough team.  We were glad to bring it home. It's been a little while."

Blair and Curtis Hancock, two of 10 seniors on the team, had sniffed championships in their careers before Saturday. When both were freshmen in 2012 the Roughriders lost in the final to Joy Christian. And....

"The last two years we got knocked out in the semis," Blair said. "We have a lot of weapons and used them all. It feels good to finally win one."

Valley Union was led in defeat by senior running back Jaret Luzania. Luzania scored three of the Blue Devils four touchdowns -- all rushing. His best run was a 71-yard TD burst up the middle that reduced Pima's lead for an instant to 30-16 early in the second period. Luzania finished with 182 yards on 22 carries.

"The first couple minutes put us too far behind," Valley Union coach Tony Luzania. "It took us out of what we wanted to do, which was run the ball. I was proud of our kids. Noone expected little Elfrida with 110 kids (students) to be here."
