December 5, 2015 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

It wasn't Red Mountain's day Friday as play began at the 2nd annual Coyote Soccer Classic at Campo Verde High School.

Sixteen boys teams and 16 girls teams are competing in the tournament that runs from Dec. 5 through the semifinals and finals on Saturday Dec. 12. Play opened with Central High's boys edging Red Mountain, 1-0. That was followed by the first girls matchup featuring Desert Vista and Red Mountain, which saw Desert Vista cruise to a 4-0 triumph.

Central squeezed out the match's only goal in the 8th minute with senior Leo Lemus Catalan tallying from short range to give the Bobcats their first win of the season. Red Mountain didn't mount much of an attack in the first half, but had rapid-fire chances midway through the second half it failed to convert.

Red Mountain first good opportunity came in the 53rd minute with a direct kick at the 18 after Central's keeper touched the ball about a yard out of the box. out of the box. Gustavo Mendes took the kick, but it caromed off Central defenders. Less than a minute later Central fouled Red Mountain in the box. Jake Miola took the PK, but it sailed wide right of the net. Another minute later Dominic Pereira's run from the angle right beat the defender, but the shot was off target. Central hung on the final 20 minutes without anxiety.

Desert Vista scored three goals in five-minute stretch to break open a tight game and blank Red Mountain. Desert Vista, last year's Division I runner-up, played quite well in its season-opener. The Thunder dominated from start to finish and substituted freely.

Paige Maling scored twice (both on corner-kick headers) while Tatum Heeres and Addison Cress scored a goal each. Heeres and Maling are the top two returning scorers from last season for Desert Vista. Maling's first goal came in the 7th minute off an assist on a corner from Isabel Deutsch. Cress scored in the final seconds of the first half to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead at intermission.

Heeres tallied in the 42nd minute and Olivia Jones supplied the corner for Maling's second goal in the 44th minute. The margin might have been greater if not for some solid goal tending by Red Mountain's Dallys Baker.

Other scores from Day 1: -- Chandler 6, Mesa 0 (girls); Desert Mountain 5, Mountain View 0 (girls); South Mountain 4, Mesa 0 (boys) and Highland 4, Skyline 0 (boys).
