Soccer: Semifinals of the Brandon bean all set

Salpointe Catholic Brandon Bean Soccer Invitational

The Brandon Bean Invitational is held every year to honor a former player who passed away in 1992 after an on-field collision at a soccer scrimmage. In addition, the tournament also honors former girl's player Laura Kea who died in an auto accident on her way to a soccer tournament.

The semifinals of the Brandon Bean Soccer Invitational are all set. On the girl's side, Tucson built a 4-0 lead on Rincon/University but the Rangers were able to cut the lead down late but still fell 4-2.

Dana Perez scored in the 22nd minute and Sabrina Zepp scored a minute later. Perez scored again in the 32nd minute then Layla Argote scored to open the second half. Rincon scored in the 62nd and finished out the scoring in the 66th on a penalty kick.

Mountain View came up with the upset of the tournament with a 1-0 win over Catalina Foothills as time expired. Division III state champion Walden Grove defeated Ironwood Ridge 3-1 and Salpointe got past Cienega in PKs.

Salpointe will face Mountain View in the semifinal round Saturday morning and Tucson will face Walden Grove. The championship is set for Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.

For the boys, Tucson got past Rincon/UHS 5-0, Sunnyside defeated Catalina Foothills 3-1, Camelback defeated Douglas 1-0 and Salpointe outlasted Cienega 2-1.

Collin Hubbard put the Bobcats up early on a goal in the 10th minute but Alfonso Cabrera tied it up 10 minutes later. Mitch Furrier came away with the winning shot for the Lancers in the final moments.

Tucson will face Camelback in one semifinal match and Salpointe will take on Camelback. The boy's final will take place at 7:30 p.m.
