Girls D-I soccer: Campo Verde trims Corona in PKs

February 2, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Campo Verde goal keeper Amanda Canzona was all over the place Tuesday night, particularly in the shootout when her team needed her most. She was only around for a little more than a half when the teams played a month ago.

Canzona made three saves and scored one of the deciding PKs in the shootout with visiting Corona del Sol that helped produce a 2-1 (3-2 PK) victory in a first-round match of the Division I girls soccer tournament.

Campo Verde (11-7-3) advances to the quarterfinals to face host and top-seed Xavier Prep on Saturday (Feb. 6) at 2 p.m. Xavier advances by blanking Red Mountain, 5-0. Corona del Sol finished the season 9-9-1.

"I knew I had to do it for my team," Canzona, who was red-carded in the first-half of a 2-0 loss to Corona back on Jan. 5, said. "I've been in PKs before. You try to learn how they play and shoot. I was ready to dive every way."

Dive she did. The teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and Corona del Sol fended off several ome scoring chances in the first overtime that finally led to PKs. Corona made its first PK and Campo Verde missed its first. That amped up the pressure on Canzona. Canzona dove to her right for the first of her saves on Corona's second PK attempt by Skylar Byrnes. On Corona's next PK Canzona dove to her left to deny a shot. The next was taken by Corona's top scorer, Olivia Nguyen. It was ripped, but Canzona leaned slightly to her right for her third save. In the interim successful Campo PKs by Gabbi Briseno and  guess who --  Canzona -- put Campo Verde up  2-1 after three plus-rounds.

Corona keeper Jordan Freese, who was outstanding in her own right during the 100-minutes of action, saved Campo's fourth PK to keep the Aztecs alive. Corona converted its fifth PK to tie at 2-2.  Kathryn Fox ended the match on Campo's fifth PK try.

"We kept battling, but came up short," Corona del Sol coach Matt Smith said. "It's hard to stomach when you get eliminated in the tournament and never trailed. That's two years in a row for us.

"Give credit to their keeper. She saved three that were on frame. This is was what an 8-9 game should be. We played as hard as we have all year. The effort was there."

Corona was the first to score. After a scoreless first half, Nguyen found the back of the net from about 15 yards out in the 46th minute. Campo Verde, which had more chances and more good chances than Corona in each half, tied it on a free kick from 20 yards out by Sebrina Rodriguez. in the 73rd minute. Rodriguez kick was deflected by Freese, but it caromed off the far post and trickled across the line for the equalizer. Freese unofficially had 13 saves, including a one-on-one, do-or-die encounter with Campo's top scorer, Whitley Johns, five minutes into the first overtime.

Campo coach Rosie Headley has become resigned to lengthy postseason games. In last year's runner-up season in Division II, Campo Verde played three matches at state last year that went beyond regulation.

"This was Campo Verde girls soccer," Headley said. "We had two (state) matches go to PKs last year and I think another one went overtime. We had a lot of opportunities to have won tonight in regulation. Whitley had nine shots herself. I'm glad we were able to hang in and take it."
