Westwood used a three-run rally with two outs in the top of the seventh Wednesday afternoon to snap a tie and defeat Marcos de Niza, 7-4, at the inaugural Bob Everett Classic at Highland High School.

Westwood's victory clinched the Pool A crown for the Warriors, who improved to 4-0 in the tournament and 11-1 overall. The top six teams in the 25-team tournament advance to Thursday's bracket play. Aaron Makil's two-out, two-run triple broke the tie and he scored the third run of the inning on a dropped pop fly. Makil came on in relief of winning pitcher Roberto Lopez and got the save.

Earlier in the day at Mesquite High, Mesquite claimed the Pool B title by edging Basha, 2-1. Tyler Jorgensen's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth broke a 1-1 tie in a pitcher's duel between Basha lefty  Jack Schneider and Mesquite righty Noah Schoenhardt. Schoenhardt got the win and help in the seventh from freshman lefty TJ Clarkson. Clarkson got the final three outs with two coming on the final play. Mesquite right fielder Willie Cano threw out the potential tying run at home with a perfect one-hop throw for the final out.

Late Wednesday afternoon Skyline wrapped up the final pool title (Pool C) by beating St. Mary's, 2-1. Skyline couldn't hold a 2-0 in the seventh of its final pool game and lost its bid for the No. 1 seed when it tied Highland, 2-2. The No. 1 seed went to Westwood, the only pool winner with a 4-0 mark. No. 2 is Skyline (3-0-1), #3 Mesquite (3-1) #4 Red Mountain (3-1) #5 Williams Field (3-1) and #6 Perry (3-1). The tie among Mesquite, Red Mountain and Williams Field was broken by fewest runs allowed in the tournament.

Bracket play commences Thursday morning (March 17) at both Mesquite and Highland high schools at 8 a.m. #3 Mesquite takes on #6 Perry at Mesquite and  #4 Red Mountain plays #5 Williams Field at Highland. The winners play again at 10:30 a.m. -- 3-6 winner plays #2 Skyline at Mesquite and 4-5 winner plays #1 Westwood at Highland. The 10:30 winners advance to the title game Thursday night at 6 at Highland HIgh.
