Perry avenges loss to Hamilton, wins MDN-CDS Softball Invite

Just eight days ago Perry met Hamilton in softball and came out on the short end of an 11-0 contest. Perry also lost its only game of the Marcos-Corona Softball Tournament Tuesday to Desert Ridge in crushing fashion, 9-1.

All that amounted to payback Wednesday as Perry tucked away those bad memories with a 4-3 victory over Hamilton to win the  championship of the annual tournament at Marcos de Niza High School.

"That (first) game was motivation for us,"  Perry catcher Shawna Hash said.

It was the first invitational tournament title won by Perry's softball team in its short history. Coach Allison Robinson was not around to see it, visiting family and turning the reins over to assistant coach Shelby Davis, who clutched the tournament trophy as the team headed off the field.

Perry (12-4) used a Hamilton error, stolen base by Laynee Gomez and an RBI single by Devon Ryan to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Third baseman Jilliam Leslie launched an opposite field homer in the fourth, her fifth of the season, to improve the lead to 2-0.

Mental mistakes by Hamilton (7-4) in the fifth allowed Perry to plate two more runs with the benefit of one hit in the inning.

"The first time we played them I think they took us lightly," Hamilton coach Keith Householder said. "We're playing better this year, and we're going to be competitive this year...

"Today our mental preparation was lacking. On plays in the field and in our pitch selection at the plate."

The losing pitcher last week to Hamilton and Tuesday against Desert Ridge was senior Jessica Wilkinson. Wilkinson was roughed up for most of the runs in both games. On Wednesday she allowed just two hits -- a bloop single with two outs in the fifth and a leadoff double in the sixth. She mixed in an effective change up that kept Hamilton off-balance without a lot of hearty swings or positive results.

Hamilton did make a late run at Perry. Sam Reynolds' bloop single in the fifth pulled the Huskies within 4-1. Four consecutive hitters reached base in the sixth against Wilkinson, the last two on an error and fielder's choice that cut the margin to 4-3. Wilkiinson induced two infield pop ups with runners at second and third to escape further damage. She recorded an easy 1-2-3 seventh to close out the Huskies.

Hamilton pitcher Abigayle Kohler gave up just one earned run and tossed a complete game. She allowed six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Hamilton isn't  finished with tournament play over its spring break. The Huskies continue an eight-day stretch of tournament games on Thursday competing in the Sandra Day O'Connor-Deer Valley Festival that  runs through Saturday at SDO and Deer Valley.
