Baseball: Basha capitalizes on free passes to clip Corona

With only two weeks left in the regular season, the focus is on playoff berths for many and section titles for a few.

Two of the top teams In Division I baseball (via powe rankings), Basha and Corona del Sol were locked in a three-way tie for first with Perry in their section as they scuffled Wednesday afternoon. The difference turned out to be Corona's wildness in the fourth inning.

Basha used three walks, two hit batters and a single to plate four runs in the fourth inning and rally for a 6-4 victory over Corona at Basha High. Basha No. 1 in D-I power-rankings, improved to 18-4 overall and 12-1 in power-ranking games. No. 3 Corona del Sol slipped to 17-5, 11-2. Basha leads D-I Section I with a 4-1 mark. Perry and Hamilton are next at 3-1 followed by Corona del Sol and Mountain Pointe at 3-2.

Corona, which led 2-0 in the first thanks to two hits, two walks and an error,  was protecting a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Starting pitcher Brandon Bracy pitched around trouble in the second and gave up a long solo homer to Michael Goodrich in the third. Wildness in the fourth inning, especially with two outs, gave Basha the ammunition to take controll. Bracy walked two batters with one out and was a pitch away from escaping with no damage. His third walk of the inning on a 3-2 pitch loaded the bases. Up came Goodrich, who was hit by Bracy's first pitch to force in the tying run.

Corona coach Dave Webb made a pitching change bringing in freshman left-hander Daniel Sotelo. Sotelo was ahead 1-2 on Gage Workman, but his next pitch plunked Workman forcing in the go-ahead run. Sotelo was ahead 0-2 on cleanup hitter Casey Legumina, but Legumina laced the next offering to left for a two-run single -- the only hit of the inning for the Bears. Basha batted around in the inning and led, 5-2.

Basha's fourth-inning outurst ended up making a winner of starter Jack Schneider. Schneider struggled with command in the first inning, but managed to work five innings. Schneider, who lost his last outing to Queen Creek last week, allowed eight hits, two walks and fanned six. Sophomore lefty Michael Perzan completed the all-southpaw pitched game (two lefties each team) with two innings of work. Perzan surrendered an unearned run in the seventh and struck out the final hitter with the tying run on base.

Both of Corona's section losses have come in the middle innings . The other was two weeks ago against Perry when defense contributed heavily to a nine-run rally by the Pumas that broke open a tight game. Corona's chances of winning the section aren't good since its losses are to two of the top three teams. Still, the Aztecs control their destiny in securing a spot in the top eight, which would earn them a coveted first-round bye in the state tournament that begins April 30.

Legumina was the only Basha player with two hits. He and Goodrich had two RBI apeice. Matt Novis led Corona with three hits and an RBI and Liam Stills checked in with two hits and an RBI.
