April 17, 2016 by Andy Morales, AZPreps365

The first path to the post season runs through the section races and this is how the races from Southern Arizona look right now.  All records are section records.

DIVISION II (24 Teams)

Section I

No. 7 Sunnyside (3-0) owns the tiebreaker over No. 18 Cienega (3-1) but the Blue Devils still have to play No. 20 Buena (2-1) and No. 17 Sahuaro (1-1). The Cougars finish with five straight section games but they dropped a big one to No. 27 Rincon last Thursday.  The Rangers are 1-3 in section play.

No. 16 Tucson (0-3) is holding strong for an at-large berth.

Section IV

No. 1 Salpointe (4-0) can win the section on Wednesday if No. 8 Canyon del Oro (2-1) beats No. 28 Vista Grande (2-1) and the Lancers beat No. 44 Marana (0-4).

No. 9 Ironwood Ridge and No. 14 Catalina Foothills are fighting for a higher seed in the state tournament while No. 23 Mountain View is trying to stay near the top 24.

DIVISION III (32 Teams)

Section II

No. 2 Nogales (6-1) will face No. 4 Sahuarita (5-1) on Tuesday night. No. 25 Rio Rico (6-2) is hoping for a Nogales loss to stay mathematically alive. No. 19 Desert View (4-2) is playing for an at-large berth. No. 36 Walden Grove (3-2) finishes with five section games.

DIVISION IV (24 Teams)

Section III

No. 3 Desert Christian (7-0) will face No. 13 Pueblo (6-0) on Wednesday but the Warriors have to deal with No. 11 Thatcher (5-1) on Monday first. Oh, and Desert Christian plays No. 1 Joy Christian Monday at Grand Canyon in the Division IV game of the week.

No. 14 Catalina (6-2)  and No. 16 Tanque Verde look good for an at-large berth but and No. 22 Amphitheater (4-3) needs to finish strong with Thatcher and Desert Christian remaining on their schedule.

Division V (24 Teams)

Section II

No. 2 Bisbee (4-0) will have to wait until April 26 to play No. 13 Valley Union (2-0). No. 10 St. Augustine (3-1) is still in the running as is No. 21 (2-3). No. 23 Tombstone (1-3) is on the edge as is No. 24 San Miguel (0-3).

Section IV

No. 9 Santa Cruz (5-0-1) has a slight lead over the rest of the field but will finish against the next three teams in the section to end the regular season.
