TENNIS: Singles & Doubles Brackets are set

The first round of the singles and doubles competition for all three divisions begins this Friday, April 22, at various sites in the Phoenix area. Here are the top seeds from Southern Arizona for each division plus some notes:

 

DIVISION II

 

Boys Singles

1 Yash Parikh, Salpointe

3 Shawn Parks, Pusch Ridge

4 George Jiang, Catalina Foothills

5 Alexis Ton, Nogales

 

No. 1 Yash Parikh won the 2014 singles championship while No. 2 Carlos Hassey (Shadow Ridge) won last year.

 

Girls Singles

2 Lindsey Pesquiera, Rincon/University

4 Morgan Chakraborty, Catalina Foothills

6 Emma Oropeza, Nogales

8 Avaani Bhalla Ironwood Ridge

 

Tucson girls have won the last five state championships.

 

Boys Doubles

2 Michael Lee/Mason Lee, Catalina Foothills

5 Jack Mandala/Cyrus Grygutis, Salpointe

6 Preston Grammond/Jarod Bristol, Pusch Ridge

7 Henry Wang/Brendan Rumel Rincon/University

 

Mike Lee won the 2013 singles title. His freshman brother Mason will be his doubles partner.

 

Girls Doubles

2 Abby Watson/Halle Zadro Catalina Foothills

3 Patricia Bernabe/Olivia Manheimer

5 Paulina Lopez/Ariana Villa Nogales

 

Abby Watson teamed up with Kirtana Bhat to win the doubles title last year. Tucson teams have won the last six championships.

 

DIVISION III

 

Boys Singles

5 Jesus Cordova, Walden Grove

 

No. 2 Kelsin Dolwani (AZ College Prep) won the state championship last year.

 

Girls Singles

2 Carli Merrill, Benson

3 Emily Lopez, Amphitheater

 

There will be a new champion this year. Estrella Foothills is now in Division II.

 

Boys Doubles

3 Noah Baker/Samuel Baker, Desert Christian

5 Byron Padrukevi/Max Mainmen, The Gregory School

 

No. 1 Thatcher doubles team member Logan McMaster will try to follow in Nathan McMaster’s footsteps. Nathan was part of two doubles titles for Thatcher.

 

Girls Doubles

2 Brandi Swenson/Carly Caylor, The Gregory School

4 Kay Lee Merrill/Piper Thoutt, Benson

 

The Gregory School won a doubles title in 2001.
