There was only one upset in the first round of the Boy’s Division II state tournament with No. 12 Ironwood taking out No. 5 Cibola 5-1. All the other matches played out according to seed, setting up a highly contested quarterfinal round on Tuesday, May 3.

No. 1 Catalina Foothills will host No. 8 Nogales in a rematch of a divisional contest that took place on March 10. The Falcons won that match 8-1.

No. 4 Skyline will host Ironwood in the only pairing that does not involve a team from Southern Arizona. The two teams have not met this year but Skyline is undefeated.

No. 4 Verrado will host No. 6 Salpointe. Verrado is 13-0 on the year but the Lancers should give them a good fight.  This match should be the most contested one of the round of 16.

No. 2 Pusch Ridge will host No. 7 Thunderbird. Pusch Ridge is 15-0 and is pretty much dominating programs many times its size. The Lions have only given up one point in the last month.

As with the boys, there was only one upset in the first round of the girl’s playoffs with No. 11 Sabino taking out No. 6 Gila Ridge 5-2 Wednesday night.

No. 1 Catalina Foothills will host No. 8 Nogales in the quarterfinal round next Wednesday, May 4. The Falcons defeated the Apaches 8-1 earlier in the year.

No. 4 Buckeye will host No. 5 Rincon/University. Buckeye struggled with No. 13 Prescott 5-3 in the first round. Rincon has an opportunity to advance to the semifinal round.

No. 3 Salpointe will host No. 11 Sabino. The Lancers were victorious (6-3) in the earlier meeting between the two but that was in March.

No. 2 Notre Dame will host No. 7 Page. Notre Dame blanked Page 9-0 last Monday to secure a section title.
