No. 7 Campo Verde scored five runs in the first inning and used that uprising Tuesday afternoon to eliminate No. 10 Horizon, 6-1, in the second round of the Division I state baseball tournament at Campo Verde.

Campo Verde collected four of its six hits in the opening inning and took advantage of a tough defensive first inning for Horizon. Garret Thornton's two-run double capped the rally off Horizon's Andrew Donovan. Donovan was not hit hard in going all six innings. After the first he retired 16 batters in a row before giving up a solo homer to Isaiah Garcia. Garcia had two hits and two RBI.

Cooper Williams and Hayden Udall teamed up for the win on the mound for Campo Verde. Williams allowed three hits, five walks and an unearned run. Udall pitched out of a jam in the fifth and allowed a walk in his three innings. Campo Verde's defense made a number of nice plays, including two  double plays. Campo Verde moves on to the double-elimination elite eight. The Coyotes take on No. 2 Perry on Thursday.

BASHA 10, BROPHY 2:  The top-seeded Bears scored six times in the first inning and knocked off the No. 16 Broncos at Basha. 

Michael Goodrich and Casey Legumina homered in the first inning. Reliable lefty Jack Schneider picked up the win with four strong innings. He allowed two hits, two runs and fanned eight. Legumiina had three RBI and Michael Scott and Ryan Tierney two RBI each. Basha is on to the double elimination elite eight and takes on Mountain Pointe.

MOUNTAIN RIDGE 9, SUNRISE MOUNTAIN 5: Another huge first inning -- a five-spot by the No. 5 Lions -- paved the way to victory over the No. 12 Mustangs at Mountain Ridge.

Tristan Thomas, Mitchel Sullivan and Chase Sandman drove in two runs apiece. Thomas and Cameron Cannon homered with Thomas going 4-for-4. Matthew Dyer chipped in with three hits for the winners.

Nolan Ruff pitched the final 3 2/3 innings in relief of Tommy Lowe. Ruff allowed two hits hit and no runs after Sunrise Mtn. pulled within 6-5 in the fourth. Mountain Ridge moves on to double elimination elite eight and faces No. 4 Sandra Day O'Connor.

SANDRA DAY O'CONNOR 8, DESERT VISTA 1: The Eagles got another strong performance to down the No. 20 Thunder at O'Connor. O'Connor scored four times in the fourth inning to extend a 2-1 lead and coasted to the finish. Ryan Alexander ptiched a four-hitter for O'Connor. Nolan Gorman and Nico Burgarello knocked in two runs each and Trey Patnoe was 3-for-3. 

CHAPARRAL 12, CORONA DEL SOl 11: The Firebirds rolled out the biggest inning of the day in D-I, scoring eight in the fifth inning and managed to hold off the Aztecs at Corona del Sol.

Drew Wayland and Tyler Stokes had three hits each for Chaparral, which outhit Corona, 17-9. Wayland got the win in relief. Leadoff hitter Chase Hamilton led Corona with three RBI. Chaparral moves on to double-elimination on Thursday against Hamilton.

HAMILTON 4, QUEEN CREEK 2: Nick Brueser homered to touch off a three-run rally in the fourth inning that guided the No. 6 Huskies over the No. 11 Bulldogs at Hamilton. Brueser's homer broke a 1-1 tie and Logan Boyer and Jake Desiderio added the other RBI in the inning with a double and sacrifice fly. Zane Strand went the distance for Hamilton. Strand gave up five hits and struck out seven.

PERRY 11, CENTENNIAL 1 (5 innings): Tayt Smith tossed a one-hitter over five innings and helped out at the plate with 2 RBI to lead the No. 2 Pumas past the No. 18 Coyotes at Perry. Trevor Hauver and Bea Brieske drove in three runs apiece for Perry.

MOUNTAIN POINTE 2, SKYLINE 1: The No. 8 Pride scored twice late on an error and wild pitch to edge the No. 9 Coyotes at Mountain Pointe. Bodey Delmar homered for Skyline's run in the fourth inning.
