State track champs Day 1: D-I and D-II

A 100-degree day greeted paricipants of the Division I and Division II state track meet on Wednesday (May 4) at Mesa Community College. Several champions were crowned with the rest to be determined on Saturday (May 7). Temperatures are expected to drop 20-25 degrees for Saturday's action. A list of winners from Wednesday and team scores for the top 3-5 teams:

DIVISION I

BOYS: Team scores thru 5 events: 1. Desert Vista 42, 2. Hamilton 22; 3. Chandler 20; 4. Corona del Sol 17; 5. Mtn. View 12. CHAMPIONS CROWNED: Triple jump: Imani Lee, Chandler (48-6 1/2); Shot put: Torrey Hickel, Desert Vista (57-1); 1,600 meters: Cade Burks, Perry (4:25.03); 800: Daniel Lozano, Boulder Creek (1:55.95): Pole vault: Connor Stevens, Hamilton (17-0).

GIRLS: Team scores thru 5 events: 1. Desert Vista 44, 2. Chandler 40, 3. Mountain Pointe 15, 4. Sandra Day O'Connor  14; 5. Xavier 12. CHAMPIONS CROWNED: Long jump: Jai Gruenwald, Chandler (19-1 1/4); High jump: Shannon Fritz, Desert Vista (5-4); Discus: Kayleigh Conlon, Mountain Pointe (131-10); 3,200. Tessa Weiss, Xavier (1-:42.35); 3,200 relay: Chandler (9:07.43).

DIVISION II

BOYS: Team scores thru 6 events: 1. Desert Edge 41, 2. Salpointe 20, 3. Queen Creek 19; 4. Marcos de Niza 18, 5. Deer Valley 15.5. CHAMPIONS CROWNED: Triple jump: Marcus Naisant, MDN (45-19 1/2); Long jump: Shamar Moreland, Betty Fairfax (23-4);  Shot put: Tyson Jones, Desert Edge (60-4); 1,600 meters: Morgan Risch, Flowing Wells (4:22.75); 800: Ryan Lanley, Washington (1:56.73); Pole vault: Logan Grizzle, Queen Creek (15-0).

GIRLS: Team score thru 6 events: 1. Deer Valley 50, 2. Skyline 18, 2. Flowing Wells 18, 4. Cactus Shadows 13.5, 5. Gila Ridge 13. CHAMPIONS CROWNED: Long jump: Abigail Spencer, Shadow Mountain (18-7 1/2); High jump: Quintella Johnson, St. Mary's (5-6); Discus: Sierra Valdivieso, Skyline (15-8); Pole vault: Katie Daily, Flowing Wells (11-1). 3,200: Kassidy Deardorff, Deer Valley (10:53.17); 3,200 relay: Flagstaff (9:40.50).

NOTES: Hamilton pole vaulter Connor Stevens won the D-I title for the third successive year, reaching the 17-foot mark. Desert Vista thrower Torrey Hickel made it two in a row in the shot put. St. Mary's high jumper Quintella Johnson won back-to-back in her event. She won in D-III last year. Chandler's Jai Gruenwald also repeated in the long jump
