Apollo claims PrimeTime boys hoops title

Apollo's boys basketball team stepped up its summer schedule the last couple of days to play a bunch of games in 48 hours. It was only in the last 10 minutes or so of its final game that it teetered.

But the teetering ended in victory as the Hawks hung on to deal Chandler a 75-71 defeat in the championship game of the 6th annual PrimeTiime Tournament at Sunnyslope High School.

"This was our sixth game since Thursday and I think you saw our legs give a little the last few minutes," Apollo coach Jacob Marin said. "We have a good group of seniors who've played together since they were freshmen. They have a lot of experience. They know what to do late in a game."

Senior guards Holland Woods and Dre Marin, both of whom earned all-tournament team honors, led the way. Woods, the tourney MVP, was outstanding in every game as a scorer, playmaker and defender. He scored 29 points in the title game (15 in the first half and 14 in the second). Marin piled up 13 of his 17 points in the opening half as Apollo (4-0) built a 40-25 lead at halftime. A third guard, Jeff Perez, chipped in with 11 points.

"He (Holland) is a special player," Jacob Marin said. "He's really improved over the years, and his vision is outstanding. He has a great all-around."

A newcomer to Apollo who recently enrolled is Trey Vinson. Vinson chipped in 10 points and had a lot to do with slow-start experienced by Chandler's top player and scorer,  junior Tevian Jones. Vinson is 6-5 and his length seemed to bother Jones early on.

Jones scored just five points in the first half on 1-of-7 shooting. His first points game with 6:35 to play in the opening 20 minutes. Jones did bounce back in the final 10-12 minutes of the second half. His shots started to fall and he finished with 19 points. Up until that point the Wolves were being carried by AJ Howard and Jalen-Gibson-Starks. Chandler had five players score in double figures led by Jones, Howard (16), Gibson-Starks (11) and Mason Mullins and Jayton Holmes with 10 apiece.

Chandler, which welcomed new coach Ed Gibson just three weeks ago, finished 2-2 in the tournament. Both losses were to Apollo. Jones was selected to the all-tournament team along with Basha's Gabe McGlothan, Mountain Ridge's Jared Rodriguez and Corona del Sol's Saben Lee.

Sunnyslope finished 3-1 overall in the tournament, followed by Basha, Perry and Corona del Sol 2-2, Mountain Ridge 1-3 and Scottsdale Christian 0-4.
