Football Walk Through: Week 3

August 30, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

Week 2 was fraught with Arizona schools matching up with out-of-state opponents. It's stateside pretty much the rest of the way. Arizona schools were 9-4 in interstate games last week. Mountain Pointe, Brophy Prep, Saguaro, Show Low, Mesa High, Kofa, Cibola, Round Valley and Red Mesa were victorious over foes from California, Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico.

Here we go to Week 3 and then Labor Day weekend:

EV win-loss breakdown Week 2: Overall EV teams won 21 games and lost 12 in games played Aug. 26-27. 6A EV teams were 8-5; 5A EV teams were 5-2; 4A EV teams were 2-3; 3A EV teams were 3-1 and 2A EV teams 3-1.

Non-East Valley games of note this week: 6A: Westview (2-0) at Brophy Prep (2-0). 5A: Centennial (1-1) at Chaparral (0-1) --Sept. 1 --; 4A: Catalina Foothills (2-0) at Saguaro (2-0); 3A-2A: Thatcher (2-0) at Safford (2-0); Globe (1-1) at Miami (1-1) -- rivalry games.

This and that: Small school football offers two fantastic matchups on paper with American Leadership Academy testing Sabino in the old Pueblo and Round Valley heading to the East Valley to play Tempe Prep. American Leadership won the kind of game Pusch Ridge prevailed in last year -- a defensive skirmish -- 14-10. ALA never trailed scoring first and holding a 14-3 lead heading to the final period. Jermiah Boyd registered his second 100-yard rushing game in as many tries. Sabino possesses one of the state's top players in quarterback-turned-running back Drew Dixon. Dixon piled up 361 yards of offense (280 rushing) in the Sabercats opener two weeks ago.....Round Valley and Tempe Prep have faced off often in postseason of late. Tempe Prep won in 2012 (first round) and Round Valley in 2013 and 2015 -- quarterfinals both times. Both teams thrive on the ground game.....Chandler plays its first home game trying to rebound from shootout loss to high-powered Centennial High of Corona, CA. Chan dler's defense couldn't deny one more red-zone stop, Allowing Centennial to march 98 yards in 90 seconds for the winning score. Chandler and Centennial had difficulty at times inside each other's 10. Not as much room to manuever. That makes a difference no matter how quick or fast players are.... Hamilton is averaging 48 points a game and faces Red Mountain, which was handled 34-10 by Chandler two weeks ago. Red Mountain had a bye last week and extra time to prepare for this one....Desert Ridge engaged in one of the rare defensive struggles from last week in bowing to Norco CA, 14-10. Another road game, this one in Tucson, should get the Jaguars in the win column.... Mesquite has two wins over EV foes (both 6A) in opening the Chad DeGrenier era. Facing Apollo is interesting since the Hawks managed to give Centennial a scare last week before falling in the second half.... A pair of 300-win coaches square off at Marcos de Niza -- Cactus' Larry Fetkenhier and Marcos' Paul Moro. Both schools won big in their openers and are likely contenders for runner-up honors in 4A to Saguaro University, . i.e. Saguaro High.
