CROSS COUNTRY: Salpointe sweeps opening meet

Vista Grande senior Johnny Desanti held off CDO sophomore Isaiah Guevara in the final dash for the finish to open up the cross country season Wednesday at Canyon del Oro. Desanti came in with a time of 17:09.77 and Guevara followed with a time of 17:10.23.

On the girl’s side, Salpointe junior standout Ana Alvarez-Tostado finished with a time of 20:12.20 to take the win with her teammate Zoey Delgado finishing with a time of 20:18.46.

As a team, Salpointe swept CDO and Vista Grande:

Most of the teams from Southern Arizona are gearing up for the 3rd Annual Desert Solstice to be run at the Crooked Tree Golf Course in Marana on Friday, Sept. 9. 60 high school teams have registered so far with the deadline to register set for Monday, Sept. 5.

The Desert Solstice will feature elementary, middle school, high school and community races with the main high school races scheduled for after 9 p.m.

The Old Pueblo Invitational will follow on Sept. 17 and the Los Mezquites Invitational will be run on Sept. 24.

The Rattler Invitational is back but it will be moved from Marana to Rio Rico this year and will be called the “Rio Rico Rattler.” The Rattler will be run on Saturday, Oct. 15 as a preparation for Sectionals scheduled for the same course on Oct. 29.  28 teams have registered for the Rio Rico Rattler so far.
