Football Walk Through: Week 5 of 11

September 12, 2016 by Les Willsey, AZPreps365

There's a little bit of something for fans of every conference this week after a bevy of surprisingly lopsided marquee games in Week 4. Namely those contests were Chandler-Mtn. Pointe, Hamilton-Desert Ridge and Williams Field-Verrado. Fortunately there is Week 5 for another try at said marquee games.

This week Mesa Mountain View steps up to visit Mountain Pointe and Brophy Prep also visits Ahwatukee to face Desert Vista. Mesquite entertains the top team in 5A in Desert Edge. Marcos de Niza visits a cooler climate with its unblemished record heading to Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain. In 3A Northwest Christian hops the bus to Queen Creek to challenge American Leadership Academy and in 2A Scottsdale Christian travels to Tempe Prep (Mesa Community College) to put its unbeaten record on the line.

WEEK 5 EAST VALLEY GAMES

Thursday Sept. 15: 6A -- Desert Mountain (0-3) at Basha (0-4). Friday Sept. 16: Mountain View (3-0) at Mountain Pointe (3-0); Dobson (3-0 at La Joya (2-1); Millennium (0-3) at Skyline (4-0); Perry (4-0) at Corona del Sol (2-2); Sandra Day O'Connor (1-2) at Chandler (2-2); Hamilton (3-1) at Cesar Chavez (0-3); Brophy Prep (4-0) at Desert Vista (1-2); Westwood (2-2) at Gilbert (0-3); Desert Ridge (2-1) at Mesa (2-2); Highland (2-2) at Westview (3-1); Red Mountain (1-2) at Boulder Creek (1-2). 5A -- Shadow Ridge (0-4) at Campo Verde (4-0); Desert Edge (4-0) at Mesquite (4-0); Chaparral  (1-2) at Williams Field (3-0); Poston Butte (3-0) at Vista Grande (0-3); McClintock (1-2) at Independence (0-3); Queen Creek (3-1) at Deer Valley (1-2). 4A -- Marcos de Niza (3-0) at Bradshaw Mountain (1-2); Odyssey Institute (1-2) at Deer Valley (1-2); Estrella Foothills (1-3) at Higley (2-1); Tempe (2-2) at Apache Junction (0-3). 3A -- Odyssey Institute (1-2) at Casteel (3-0); Valley Christian (0-3) at Benjamin Franklin (3-1); Northwest Christian (3-0) at American Leadership Academy (3-1). 2A -- Chandler Prep (3-1) at Glendale Prep (1-3); Antelope (0-4) at Santan Foothills (2-1); Scottsdale Christian (4-0) at Tempe Prep (2-1); Gilbert Christian (2-1) at Phoenix Christian (2-1).

THIS AND THAT:  Mesa Mountain View has seen the level of opponent increase each week -- Valley Vista to Corona del Sol to Pinnacle and this week considerably to Mountain Pointe. best win among its three was over Pinnacle last week. Mountain Pointe was well rested with a bye prior to facing Chandler, but nonetheless turned in as impressive a performance as any team's posted so far.... Brophy Prep hasn't received the accolades of Mountain Pointe, Chandler, Hamilton and Desert Ridge, but the Broncos are usually at or near those schools' level. They've played their way into the 6A conversation methodically disaptching Pinnacle, Edison (Fresno Calif.), Westview and Highland. Desert Vista is capable of pulling off an upset, but the Broncos have been superb on the defensive side of the ball and are the best team the Thunder have faced in that respect thus far.....Few if any gave Higley a chance last week of knocking off Saguaro. It was a game the first 24 minutes. The scenario is similar with regard to Desert Edge and Mesquite this week. Can Mesquite hang in with seasoned Desert Edge? Mesquite has taken care of business in all its games, but the talent level and experience of Desert Edge points to a decisive win all things even. Desert Edge quarterback Tehran Thomas hasn't missed a beat from last year''s play. He's rushed for 10 TDs and passed for 5. Mesquite has run the ball well and actually has thrown considerably less then the typical Chad DeGrenier team......Northwest Christian hasn't suffered a dropoff from its play of last year that ended in a 3A runner-up finish to Pusch Ridge. Senior Tyler Worrell has stepped in at quarterback  and averaged 207 yarda a game and three TDs through the air. The rushing attack remains strong led by Caleb Egherman. American Leadership has faced three solid opponents so far and won two of those three games stepping up from 2A The teams have a common opponent behind them in Fountain Hills. Both prevailed in similar fashion...Perry for the second straight year has opened 4-0. There is a different feel about this team, one that could notch seven maybe eight wins come the end of October for the Pumas. It remains to be seen if the Pumas have gained on Hamilton and Chandler. They play them plus Brophy and Val Vista Drive-rival Basha when region play begins in October. This week's foe -- Corona del Sol--  is 2-2 and shouldn't be taken lightly......Dobson and Campo Verde haven't lost yet and neither should be knocked for winning against perceived albeit likely lesser opponents. There's no doubt they have tougher competition ahead. It's those outcomes that will determine if they are postseason worthy. For Dobson that means essentially all its region games -- Skyline, Red Mountain, Mountain View, Mesa and Westwood. Campo Verde has Mesquite, Queen Creek and Williams Field down the road.... Poston Butte is clearly much better than its early slate of opponents -- Goldwater, Independence, Glendale and this week -- Vista Grande. The Broncos and new coach Cody Collett most likely will have their season boil down to outcomes of three games -- Marana Mountain View, Williams Field and Marana. If its region plays out like it appears at this point -- the Marana game may be for the region title and automatic state berth.....Tempe Prep, which lost a hard-fought battle with Round Valley two weeks ago, takes another stab at a 2A contender with Scottsdale Christian and its freshman standout quarterback Jack Miller. Miller  has thrown for 1,300 yards and 21 TDs in four games. All have been routs of teams who are a combined 3-9 Both teams have a common opponent in Glendale Prep they defeated with ease. This is a region game and the winner likely will wear the region crown come season's end.
