It wasn't an exact replica, but pretty darn close.

Mountain Pointe's second girls volleyball triumph in six days over Gilbert High on Tuesday night was a 3-1 win. The Pride accomplished it again after dropping the first set. This time it was on the Tigers' home court by scores of 25-27, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-18.

Mountain Pointe improved to 14-3 overal and 8-1 in power-ranking matches. Add a strong showing in the Tournament of Champions last weekend at Westwood and the Pride is angling to be more than just another decent team. They are also 2-1 in Central Region play with their loss to Corona del Sol last week.

"I know a lot of teams say this, but I don't think we're as good as we're going to be," Mountain Pointe coach Karen Gray said. "The first set we had eight service errors. And they kind of served us off the court. It comes down to serving and passing and we did a good job after the first set."

Mountain Pointe has a solid corps of players and its attack is varied. On Tuesday the offense was led by Piper Manross (15 kills), Chapin Gray (14 kills) and Avery Luoma (12 kills). Setter Gabby Leo enjoyed her usual terrific match with 44 assists. Anna Morse had 19 digs and Gray capped a nice night with nine digs and six aces.

Had Mountain Pointe not made so many service errors and been pounded for four aces in the first half of the first set, it may have swept Gilbert. The Tigers bugaboo thus far this season has been its passing and that facet didn't show much improvement. Coach Joe Hesse spent much of the final two sets trying to get consistency in the team's passing, but it never came.

Gilbert gave up one ace in the opeing set and 12 over the final three. Mountain Pointe took the lead in a close second set with an 11-1 run after calling timeout down 9-7. A 10-3 run in the third set to led to a rout. Ditto a 9-2 run in the fourth set with Mountain Pointe up 11-9.

Gilbert is 9-7 overall and 5-4 in power-ranking matches. The losses to Mountain Poiinte leave the Tigers 1-2 in their region, which also features Corona del Sol, Desert Vista, Highland and Desert Ridge.

Gilbert was led statistically (unofficially) by outside hitter Kaitlyn Lines with 18 kills and middle blocker Krystal Blair with 11 kills.
